Fried Carrot Cake at Clementi 448 Stall
The Fried Carrot Cake stall at Clementi hawker centre, located at unit #01-45, has a long past. Apparently it traces its history back three generations to a push cart in the 1960s.
There are two options at the stall – you have a choice of white fried carrot cake or black fried carrot cake.
The reason for the long queues can be traced in part due to how they prepare the carrot cake. This is done in batches so if you miss the current batch, you may have to wait for the next one before you get your plate of fried carrot cake. Count it as a measure of your luck for the day!

Trying the Fried Carrot Cake or Chai Tow Kway in Clementi Market
Fried Carrot Cake or Chai Tow Kway is a staunchly breakfast dish but in reality, it can be enjoyed at any time of the day.
We tried the both the white carrot cake and the black carrot cake.
Personally, we found the taste to be a good combination of charred bits comprising the egg and some carrot cake (which is really radish), spicy chili, cai poh, and the soft carrot cake. This gives it a mix of crunch along with the softness of the carrot cake.
The fried carrot cake is not too oily either. It is chopped up in smaller bits, so much so that it is served with a spoon and you can use it to scoop up the carrot cake.
We didn’t taste very much wok hei in the carrot cake but that was not really a deal breaker. Just take note that they do not sprinkle on spring onions either. However, this allowed the carrot cake flavour to stand on its own – which isn’t a bad thing.
One thing to note is that because it is a stall that has been passed down through generations, you may come across some of the younger generation frying the carrot cake. However, that should not detract you from enjoying this classic hawker breakfast dish.
Fried Carrot Cake at Clementi 448 Food Centre offers the chai tow kway in three sizes – small for $4, medium for $5 and large for $6.
The Fried Carrot Cake stall has a 4.2 star rating on Google Reviews.
Overall Thoughts and Review of the Fried Carrot Cake Stall at Clementi Hawker Centre
If you are looking for a good and reliable plate of chai tow kway, you will be able to find it here at the Fried Carrot Cake Stall at Clementi Hawker Centre. The lines can get quite daunting though, so if you come by see a short queue, don’t hesitate to jump in line to get your fill of the fried carrot cake.
Personally, we preferred the white carrot cake to the black carrot cake because we felt that it allowed the flavour to come through a bit better. We generally find the sauce in the black carrot cake to overwhelm the taste of the dish.
