TANYU has built a devoted following in Singapore since opening its first outlet here in 2017, earning a reputation as one of the go-to destinations for Sichuan-style grilled fish.

Now, the grilled fish specialist is venturing beyond its signature dish with the launch of a brand-new BBQ Skewer menu – a bold move that promises over 40 skewer options grilled fresh to order. The question is: can TANYU translate its mastery of the grill into this new offering?

Introducing TANYU’s BBQ Skewers

It was perhaps only a matter of time before TANYU expanded into the ever-popular world of BBQ skewers, and the result is an impressively curated spread.

We visited the newly reopened 313 Somerset flagship outlet for lunch and were greeted by the centrepiece of this new offering – a dedicated Chinese Skewer Live Station with more than 40 varieties to choose from.

The experience feels interactive and fresh: rather than ordering off a static menu, diners can handpick their skewers from a chilled display and have them grilled to order. It’s a thoughtful touch that adds a sense of occasion to the meal. TANYU’s skewers are prepared fresh every morning and kept on a bed of ice to lock in their flavours – a small detail that speaks to the brand’s commitment to quality.

We tried TANYU’s top 5 BBQ Skewers and they did not disappoint. My two favourites were the Thick Cut Pork Belly skewer ($3.90) and Sichuan Peppercorn Chicken Wing ($4.90).

Thick Cut Pork Belly skewer

The former is made from thick slices of premium Hunan pork belly, lightly seasoned with spices and topped with chopped spring onions to balance the richness. I particularly liked how the seasoning was not overpowering, thereby bringing out the pure flavour of the pork belly. This will be a hit with the pork belly purists.

Sichuan Peppercorn Chicken Wing

On the other hand, the Sichuan Peppercorn Chicken Wing had the strongest seasoning, having been tossed with an aromatic, spicy and numbing Sichuan peppercorn mixture. The chicken wing itself was also large and remained juicy and crispy.

Pineapple with Caramel ($2.90)

The skewer that surprised me was the Pineapple with Caramel ($2.90). The caramel forms a crust coating the pineapple slices, like a crème brulee. The sweet and nutty caramel flavour really comes through and pairs well with the fresh pineapple slices. Rounding out the top 5 skewers are the Teriyaki Black Pork Belly with Asparagus ($2.90) and Teriyaki Black Pork Belly with Enoki Mushrooms ($2.90).

The Classics

TANYU: More Than Sichuan-Style Grilled Fish

A visit to TANYU wouldn’t be complete without ordering their grilled fish. We had their award-winning Grilled Fish with Fresh Green Pepper (from $48.90). When the dish arrived at our table, the fish was completely buried under what can only be described as a mountain of fresh green peppers.

I braced myself for an eye-watering level of heat, but thankfully it wasn’t spicy at all. The fresh green peppers lend a bright, grassy flavour rather than any real heat, and it’s the Jiangjin Chinese prickly ash – the first-harvest large-grain variety, no less – paired with their fiery Seven Star Chilli that delivers the dish’s signature aromatic and numbing kick. True to their dedication to using only top-quality ingredients, TANYU knows how to layer flavours for maximum impact.

As a complement to soak up the delicious sauce, we added TANYU’s Black Beancurd ($3 for half, $5 for full) to the grilled fish dish. The beancurd is made in-house, with charcoal added for that distinctive black colour.

Fresh Green Chilli Bullfrog with French Beans ($49.80)

Another popular dish is the Fresh Green Chilli Bullfrog with French Beans ($49.80). The bullfrogs were sliced into bite-sized pieces, maximising the surface area that can be coated with the nicely reduced sauce, ensuring each piece is packed with flavour. And it was certainly spicy: I was breaking into a light sweat and reaching for my drink. Lovers of bold, fiery food will be right at home here but consider yourself warned if you have a lower spice tolerance.

Capping off the lunch was a fan favourite, Sichuan Spicy Chicken ($19.80), aka 辣子鸡. Slightly spicy and delightfully crispy, what sets it apart is the batter: light, shatteringly crisp, and remarkably grease-free. Tossed with dried chillis and numbing peppercorns, the seasoning clings beautifully to each piece.

Final Thoughts

Final Thoughts

TANYU’s foray into BBQ skewers is a confident and well-executed one. The Live Station concept brings energy and theatre to the dining experience, and the variety on offer – over 40 skewers spanning meats, seafood, and even fruit – means there is genuinely something for everyone. The skewers we tried were consistently well-seasoned and skilfully grilled, striking a good balance between bold flavour and respect for the main ingredient.

With the current 50% off promotion on the Top 5 BBQ Skewers with any grilled fish order, now is an excellent time to discover what this new chapter has to offer. Whether you’re a long-time TANYU fan or coming in for the first time, the new BBQ Skewer menu is well worth exploring.
