Those who paid a visit to the old Bukit Timah Market & Food Centre would definitely know about the famous He Zhong Carrot Cake. It is so well loved that plenty are willing to endure the long queues and waiting time for it. With the reconstruction of the old food centre ongoing, the Bukit Timah carrot cake stall can now be found at the Interin Market & Food Centre, just across the road from the old location.

The He Zhong Carrot Cake stall has built up quite a reputation over the years for its carrot cake or chai tow kway.

While you can normally choose from between the black or white variations, He Zhong Carrot Cake only serves the white version of the carrot cake, or more rightly radish cake.

We headed over to its new location at Interim Bukit Timah Market & Food Centre to give the chai tow kway a try.

The queues for the radish cake are usually especially long in the mornings. After all, radish cake is a popular Singaporean breakfast food. Therefore, if you are there for breakfast, be prepared to wait.

Thankfully, we arrived in the late afternoon and He Zhong Carrot Cake stays open till 8 pm. This meant that we could get a plate of the fried carrot cake for our tea time snack.

We placed an order for the smallest plate of chai tow kway which costs $3.50. The medium and large sizes are $4.50 and $5.50 respectively.

You can let them know if you want chilli with the carrot cake.

When we ordered, there was a dollop of sambal that was smeared into our carrot cake order.

We wanted more chilli and asked for it and an extra spoonful of chilli was added on to our place.

There is good reason why the He Zhong Carrot Cake is so highly rated.

The carrot cake was nice with a soft bite. It had a perfect balance of firmness and fluffiness. It tastes authentic and, somehow, they have managed to deliver a consistent flavour through all the years.

Even though the carrot cake itself was soft, there was a crispiness at the bits that had been fried in the pan, especially the parts where there was egg. This contrasted nicely with the rest of the carrot cake.

Their version of the carrot cake is so good that there is no need for them to fry the black version. Everyone heads to their stall to enjoy the white carrot cake.
