Good afternoon tea establishments are usually overpriced or crowded, but luckily, the newly relaunched tea tradition of the St. Regis is neither of those. At $65 per set (before GST), with one pot of tea or coffee and unlimited scones, the Summer Garden Afternoon Tea set served at The Tea Room of the St. Regis is the reward for hustling at work or home during the week. Pro tip – skip lunch before you partake of this afternoon tea.
The Tea Room at St. Regis Singapore
The recently renovated hotel is back in full, quiet force, and their classic afternoon tea ritual announces this with proud elegance. Cleverly situated in a semi-hidden alcove of the hotel’s lobby, The Tea Room manages to be both luxurious yet relaxing enough for small, intimate gatherings and tea-spilling – just don’t spill your sustainably-sourced Taylors of Harrogate tea that accompanies the delectable savoury handcrafted canapés and sweet treats presented in the traditional three-tier fashion.
Not a tea person? I will refrain from judging because The Tea Room offers coffee from Tanamera Coffee & Roastery, which smells great to a non-coffee drinker like me.

Previously, St. Regis Singapore served afternoon tea in Astor Grill, but have now appointed the new, botanical-themed The Tea Room as their afternoon tearoom. No complaints from me here, since The Tea Room is decorated in pleasing, muted shades of ivory, sky blue and blush pink.
In another venue, these colours might come across as ‘meh’ but the burnished copper and champagne gold of the ornaments and WMF Cromargan cutlery help to ground this interior very well. The Tea Room feels like a space you could keep going back to and never feel bored with. With a maximum of 30 each seating, you will be a promised a quiet luxurious tea time that feels exclusive and intimate enough for some “spilled tea”.
Afternoon Tea at The Tea Room
Though not a buffet, the savoury and sweet food are substantial and more importantly, taste good.
You are first welcomed with a glass of Copenhagan Sparkling Tea (upgrade to a glass of R de Ruinart Brut Champange, the set will cost $95++ per person). The canapés are presented on the glass insert of a wooden box, through which you see artfully arranged vegetables and flowers.
This is in line with the Summer Garden theme of this limited, first edition of The Tea Room’s afternoon tea at the St. Regis. The same homage to Singapore’s Botanic Gardens carries though from the lovely white and blue Luzerne (a local ceramics company!) Lancaster Gardens tableware, to the edible flowers that sit prettily atop the light Goat Cheese Tart with Elderflower and Chervil.
The Prawn Mousse in a Beetroot Cone and Avruga was a delightful burst of flavour in the mouth, and the Cucumber and Tomato Hummus Sandwich had a subtle spice that lingered pleasantly. The St. Regis Tea-Infused Salmon Mosaic with Cream Cheese and Mango Pearls was interesting, the tea’s flavour balancing the saltiness of the salmon somewhat well.
Rated the best savoury item by my tea partner and I was the Foie Gras Terrine, held together on both sides by Shortbread and crowned with Raspberry Caviar – what a privilege to have tasted this buttery, sweet and salty wonder!
Complementing the modern presentation of the savoury items was the traditional three-tiered tray of sweets. Even if you don’t have a sweet tooth, you might be pleasantly surprised by the cakes, mousse and tartlets that are, dare I say, not too sweet.
The Pear and Chocolate Vanilla seems to have been prepared with dark chocolate – the cream had the right tinge of bitter, and cutting through that would take you to the sweet, tart pear slice beneath. The Jasmine Citrus was refreshing and light, after the deep earthiness of the Pear and Chocolate Vanilla. These were the top two sweet items for us.
The Pistachio Financier Cake did not seem to taste like pistachios, but this tea cake was light, yet had a firm texture, like all solid cakes should have. The orange compote added flavour to this otherwise confusing item. If you like citrusy flavours, other than the Jasmine Citrus, you will love the Tropical Garden Tartlet. Rounding off the sweets are the Vanilla Macaron and Lime Caramel Praline.
By this time, my stomach was near bursting, but I could still appreciate the authentic, clean vanilla flavour of the macaroon.
I left the scones for last for a reason. The unlimited scones. We had two choices, the original St. Regis Scone, and the Lemon Scone. Both were served with passionfruit caviar, clotted cream and four types of jam. Clotted cream, not unheard of in Singapore’s afternoon tea scene, is also not frequently available. St. Regis’ Tea Room served this to us in a generous tin. Pop the cover off, and you see a generous amount of sunny little caviar on top of the clotted cream.
Do you now understand why I am writing this way about St. Regis’ afternoon tea? Not only do you get quality canapés and sweets, you can have your fill of scones that, get this, come around on a trolley. The other trolley service is the tea sommelier service, and I will get to that later, but trust me when I say, the scones, even with just the passionfruit caviar and clotted cream can send one to tea heaven, if there is such a thing.
The tea sommelier leads one of the unique rituals of the St. Regis afternoon tea. Knowledgeable and friendly staff make their way around the The Tea Room and introduce the different teas to you. The teas are arranged neatly on a trolley. You can even sniff a sample of the tea leaves if you are unsure what tea to pair the food with. In addition to the usual English Breakfast and Earl Grey tea (amongst others), there are also two decaffeinated options – a Moroccan mint and a black tea – for the wiser ones who prefer sleeping well at night.
The two trolley services (scones and tea) are introduced as the traditions and rituals of the St. Regis’ take on afternoon tea. I, however, see them as unique experiences that liven up the afternoon tea session. That, and the cute little passionfruit caviar. Yes, The Tea Room is elegant, it is modern, it respects tradition, but you can also have fun there.
Review of the St. Regis Singapore Summer Garden Afternoon Tea at The Tea Room
The St. Regis Afternoon Tea at The Tea Room allows you to spoil yourself within reason. It is a must-go if you want the full afternoon tea experience. On weekends, a harpist plays soothing tunes – we enjoyed the lilting renditions of songs from popular musicals and movies. Here, you can rest for a while, away from the hustle and bustle of Singapore’s streets. The food is top-notch and the service is impeccable. Also, unlimited scones.
The Tea Room seats a little more than 30 people at a time for the Summer Garden Afternoon Tea, so it is comfortable and cosy. The plush furniture absorbs most of the noise from other conversations happening around you, and you can feel like you are with people, but also in a space curated for just you and your partner or bestie(s).
The St. Regis Afternoon Tea is back, and we welcome it with open arms.
