Cats the Musical will be streaming for free this weekend. No, it is not the much-panned 2019 version but a recording of the stage musical version.

Cats the Stage Musical, Not the Other One

Cats is Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 1981 musical about a group of cats, the Jellicle Cats. It is based on T.S. Eliot’s collection of poems and is best known for its musical number Memory. The plot, if you can call it one, tells the individual stories of the tribe’s various cats as they all vie to be taken up to the equivalent of cat heaven.

The musical was recently staged in Singapore in 2019 at the Marina Bay Sands’ theatres.

The version of Cats the Musical that is being shown this weekend is a direct-to-video film that was recorded at London’s Adelphi Theatre in 1998. Most notably, it features the original West End Grizabella, Elaine Paige, who sings the musical’s famous song Memory.
