Judging by the crowds, its seems that Singaporeans have become enamoured by Don Don Donki. Or maybe, it is just the Singaporean obsession with all things new.
If you haven’t heard by now, Don Don Donki at Orchard Central, the first in Southeast Asia for Japan’s popular Don Quijote, is a discount store which stocks items from Japan. You can think of it as a cross between Daiso and our very own Mustafa.
Here are seven things to know about Don Don Donki if you are planning a visit sometime soon.
1. Located at Orchard Central B1 and B2
Don Don Donki is located at the basement levels of Orchard Central, B1 and B2. It is spread over two floors. The Basement 1 section of the store is located next to another popular Japanese store, Tokyu Hands, while the Basement 2 section is an escalator and a short walk away.
2. Retail at B1, Supermarket at B2
The discount store is organised into retail goods on B1 and a supermarket at B2 and there is plenty to browse through at its close to 1,400 square metre floor space.
At Basement 1, you will find the following “departments”:
Confectionary, Cosmetics, Pet Goods, Home Goods, Health Goods, Bags, Bedding, Hobbies and Toys, Clothing, Stationery, Perfume, Timepieces and Souvenirs.
Basement 2 is where you will find:
Fruits and Vegetables, Chilled Foods, Fresh Fish, Fresh Meat, Processed Foods, Snacks and Liquor. It has a takeaway delicatessen section that sells sushi and sashimi too.
3. 24-hour Shopping
Good news for night owls, Don Don Donki is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This means that late night shopping in Singapore now has a new destination centrally located in the heart of Orchard Road.
4. Seasonal Goods at the Back
At the rear of the retail space at B1, there is a department devoted to seasonal goods. For example, with Christmas around the corner, you can find all sorts of festive items there, from Christmas sets to quirky hats.
5. Narrow Aisles
The store is packed with goods and the aisles are pretty narrow at Don Don Donki. When crowded, you might find yourself having to squeeze past folks to move through the store.
6. Turn the Package Around
Much of the packaging is in Japanese. If you come across something which piques your interest but wonder how it is used, turn to the back of the item and you may find useful information in the universal language of pictures!
7. Second Don Don Donki Outlet Coming in 2018
More Don Don Donki outlets are planned for Singapore with a second outlet set to open in Tanjong Pagar in June 2018. We can just imagine it will be highly popular with the office crowd in the area.
