Singapore is the world’s largest exporter of ornamental fish. Koi, guppies, and goldfish are among the popular breeds of fish exported and you can view them all at Mainland Tropical Fish Farm in Pasir Ris.
Established in the 1970s, Mainland Tropical Fish Farm started off as small-scale fish breeder in Sembawang. Fast forward to the 2000s and the company is now located at Pasir Ris Farmway 1 with multiple outdoor ponds, tanks laden with fish, and trading partners around the world.
Fish Farming
Mainland Tropical Fish Farm still feels like a old-school farm, one where the proprietors live on the premises and where time moves a bit slower.
On a visit, you can walk among the various outdoor fish ponds. These are deep ponds – up to two metres – and you can see the fish swimming around at different levels in the pond.
Beyond the ponds, there is a sheltered area where fish tanks are lined up in rows.
You can also venture into an indoor area where more fish can be found.
A shop on the premises also sells aquarium and fish supplies.
Fishy Activities
Families who visit can buy food pellets to feed to the fish. Head to the office area to purchase the fish food. Two sizes are available, a small-sized packet costs $1 and a larger one costs $3.
You can bring the packets of fish food to the outdoor ponds to feed the fish. Merely the act of stretching your hands out over the water brings the fish swimming to your location.
Another activity for kids at Mainland Tropical Fish Farm is longkang fishing.
For $4 per child, little ones can get a net and a bucket to scoop out tiny fish from a little manmade stream built between the ponds. They get to bring home the fish at the end of the longkang fishing activity.
Mainland Tropical Fish Farm also has an outdoor event space for rent. The farm will provide the event space with tables and chairs and you can cater your own food if required. Activities, such as longkang fishing, are on top of the space rental rate.
