“Do you know how much it costs to drive into Malaysia by the Tuas Second Link?” was the question I posed across the table.
It had been years since I had last driven into Malaysia. The recent “hoo-ha” about reciprocal road charges between Singapore and Malaysia had done little to make things clearer in my mind. I was due to drive up to LEGOLAND Malaysia Resort the next day and was hoping to find out what I needed to prepare.
“No, I don’t know how much it costs to drive into Malaysia, but I would like to find out as I’m driving up next month,” came the reply from my friend who seemed more interested in the food on the table.
“Okay, I’ll let you know,” I said.
Driving into Malaysia by the Second Link
The next morning, the family packed into the car and started the drive West towards the Tuas Second Link.
We waited dutifully in the long line of cars for our turn to reach the immigration counter. When we did, we handed over our passports along with toll fees by inserting our cash card into a machine.
Cha-ching. Minus S$3.20. This is the toll charge for departing Singapore through the Tuas Checkpoint via a private car.
We have always loved driving across the bridge connecting Tuas to Johor. The 1.92 km drive over the water affords a great view of the straits between Singapore and Malaysia. This time around, the kids strained their necks trying to spot Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve and other landmarks.
As we approached the Sultan Abu Bakar CIQ Complex, there was the expected line of vehicles.
When it finally came our turn at the counter, we wound down the car windows only to find that the charge of RM20 could only be paid by a Touch and Go Card, the contactless payment card used for toll payments in Malaysia. Cash payments are not accepted.
As we did not have a Touch and Go Card, the wife had to jump out of the car and purchase one from an office on the right of the immigration complex while the rest of us waited in the car. When she came back, it was light tap on the card reader and off we went.
Cha-ching. Minus RM20 for entry into Malaysia.
Leaving immigration behind, we arrived at the Tanjung Kupang Toll Plaza. This time, we used our newly acquired Touch and Go Card. A simple tap and up went the barrier.
Cha-ching. Minus RM7.50 for toll charges.
After that, it was on to LEGOLAND Malaysia Resort.
On the return journey, it was another RM7.50 at the Tanjung Kupang Toll Plaza and S$3.20 at the Singapore immigration counter.
