My Tree House, the world’s first green library for kids, opened its doors on 31 May 2013 for children to learn more about caring for the environment at the Central Public Library.

Jointly presented by National Library Board (NLB) and City Development Limited, this library encourages children to “explore, discover and challenge their curiosity in learning and caring for the environment”.

My Tree House Opened

My Tree House was officially opened by Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, Minister for Communications and Information, amidst guests and about 30 excited children from My First Skool.

The children gave a big “wow” when the Tree House Centrepiece was unveiled in its enchanted forest ambience and squealed with delight as they encountered NLB’s squirrel mascot at the green library.

Mrs Elaine Ng, Chief Executive Officer of NLB shared that “this special library is for children to see, read, touch and experience a magical journey into learning and caring for the environment.”

45,000 books are housed within My Tree House and about 30% of these cover green topics including animals, plants, nature, water resources, weather, environment, recycling and climate change.

Children can also read green themed eBooks, play educational games at the child-friendly eReading kiosks, and join in storytelling and craft-making sessions at My Tree House.

Play and Learn

A multi-sensory experience has been built into My Tree House. Children can interact with The Knowledge Tree, a shadow wall play, to learn about the environment and energy conservation. They can also discover more about Singapore’s temperature, rainfall and wind speed life through The Weather Stump.

This green library is the first in the world to incorporate green principles in design, infrastructure and use of sustainable materials, as well as book collection and programming.
