Two local tales get a retelling in Legends of Singapore at Gardens by the Bay. The Friendly Snake and The Scourge of the Swordfish will be performed from 2 to 4 August and 16 to 18 August as part of the Gardens by the Bay’s National Day 2019 celebrations.

The Friendly Snake

The Friendly Snake is a tale about the friendship between a village girl and a snake living in a tree. However, things take a turn when the village’s livestock goes missing. Could it be the snake’s doing? This performance will be held at Bayfront Plaza.

The Scourge of the Swordfish

The Scourge of the Swordfish is the story of how Bukit Merah or Redhill got its name. When a fishing village comes under attack by swordfish, a plan is needed to save the village.This show will take place at Gardens by the Bay’s Malay Garden.

The Scourge of the Swordfish
Dates:

4 pm to 4.10 pm,
4.50 pm to 5 pm,
5.40 pm to 5.50 pm,
6.30 pm to 6.40 pm.

The Friendly Snake
Dates:
Friday, 2 August to Sunday, 4 August
Friday, 16 August to Sunday, 18 August
Times:
4.25 pm to 4.35 pm,
5.15 pm to 5.25 pm,
6.05 pm to 6.15 pm,
6.55 pm to 7.05 pm.

The stories are told through a combination of song, dance, drama and puppetry.

Orkestar Trio, who play traditional Malay instruments with a modern interpretation, will provide the music for The Scourge of the Swordfish.

Both Legends of Singapore performances will feature musicians playing traditional and ethnic instruments with a contemporary interpretation.

Legends of Singapore is produced by Dick Lee Asia, with creative direction by Dick Lee and costume design by designer Yang Derong. It is scripted by Jean Tay, and directed by Lewin Bernard with Bright Ong serving as assistant director and puppet consultant.

Felix Loh, CEO of Gardens by the Bay, said, “The outdoor gardens at Gardens by the Bay are beautiful spaces, some showcasing the rich heritage of Singapore through plants and landscaping, and serve as wonderful settings for events. We hope to introduce these lesser known, but nonetheless charming, green spaces to our visitors by holding more activities here.”

Both The Friendly Snake and The Scourge of the Swordfish performances are free.
