My family of four had previously purchased annual passes from LEGOLAND Malaysia, so we decided to make a quick stop in Johor Bahru before heading up to Desaru during June holidays. While searching for nearby accommodation, we came across Sunway Grid Residences themed lofts, just a six-minute drive from LEGOLAND Malaysia, and we decided to give it a go. It turned out to be a total hit with everyone!
This was also our first time staying somewhere other than a hotel as a family and here’s how it went.
Sunway Grid Residences Themed Lofts
Our Malaysia holiday started off with a train ride from Singapore into Johor Bahru and we first had lunch in City Square mall. After grabbing a light breakfast at Lavender Bakery, we booked a Grab and headed straight to Sunway Grid Residences.
A day before our arrival, we completed an online check-in, during which we received detailed instructions for the process.

When we arrived Sunway Grid Residences, we scanned a QR code at the security counter to register as guests. Then, using the provided passcodes, we collected our access cards from the letterbox room.
With the cards in hand, we took the lift up to our themed loft — and just like that, our playcation officially began!
Themed Loft Room
The charming loft-style apartment at Sunway Grid Residences featured a cozy ground floor with a kitchenette and living area, and a mezzanine level that was accessible by stairs or ladder that served as the main sleeping space.
The moment we stepped into the themed loft, the kids were thrilled!
The space was cozy, fun, and full of personality. We had booked the Hello Kitty–themed unit, where the entire room is styled in soft pastel pinks and adorned with subtle character decals, capturing the whimsical charm of Hello Kitty. It was an absolute dream for little girls!
The unit is able to comfortably accommodate up to six guests, with two sets of double beds on the mezzanine and a queen-sized mattress on the lower level.
To make the stay more convenient, six sets of towels and toiletries were provided, along with a small stash of snacks and a fizzy welcome drink.
Besides the Hello Kitty themed loft, there are other themes to choose from, such as Minions, Doraemon, Avengers and more.
A Playground Built into the Room
The built-in indoor playground at the themed loft was split into two fun zones.
The first featured a pastel-toned rock climbing wall, monkey bars, and two mini swings, perfect for imaginative play. My kids turned this area into their very own “jungle treetop house,” with my older daughter even choosing to sleep up there at night!
There was also a cozy cargo net beside the bedding area, where the kids loved lounging and hanging out.
The second play area featured a slide with thoughtfully cushioned with mats to soften the ride.
This corner also housed the projector, which cast movies and shows onto the wall opposite. While the swings and slides were a big hit, movie time definitely captured my girls’ attention too!
Since the kids were so hooked on the room and didn’t want to leave, we ended up ordering GrabFood from two nearby restaurants at Eco Botanic.
To my surprise, our dinner arrived in under 30 minutes even during peak hours! And that brings me to the next highlight: the kitchenette.
Kitchenette
The kitchenette was thoughtfully stocked with everything you might need for a short stay. It included a set of cutting tools (knives, scissors, and chopping boards), dishwashing essentials, a microwave, rice cooker, stove, washing machine, and even a Hello Kitty-themed air fryer with a silicone container.
There was also a compact fridge with an ice tray, a hot and cold water dispenser, and drawers filled with plates, bowls, and cutlery.
Out of all the amenities, the water dispenser was my personal favourite! We filled our thermal bottles with cold water before heading to Legoland, and it was such a treat to enjoy chilled drinks while out and about. It’s definitely reassuring not to worry about drinking water during the stay.
Facilities at Sunway Grid Residences
The property also offers a swimming pool and a gym located on the facility floor. I spotted a sign for a “Games Room” as well, although we didn’t have time to check it out.
My husband made use of the gym in the morning and mentioned that it was surprisingly well-equipped and comfortable to work out in.
Location
Sunway Big Box is just a five-minute walk from Sunway Grid Residences, but we only managed to visit it on our check-out day since we didn’t need a visit to an indoor playground or cinema during our stay.
Howver, with luggage in tow and the sun blazing, we opted to take a quick Grab ride to Sunway Big Box instead of making the walk — and the short two-minute ride was totally worth it!
Eco Botanic is also nearby and home to several great eateries, along with a Jaya Grocer where we stocked up on fresh fruits.
Legoland is only a 6-minute drive away. We woke up at 9.30 am and still managed to beat the crowd and began exploring the park by 10.30 am, just before the heat kicked in.
We also learned that Rud Go Karting is located close by, but our girls happily traded night karting for more in-room playtime and a movie, so we ended up skipping that this round.
Hiccups
Our stay did come with a few minor hiccups. I had some questions regarding the address and booking details before arrival and reached out to the team via WhatsApp. While I appreciated having a contact point, responses were slow at times — and a few queries went unanswered altogether. That said, communication improved significantly after we checked in, though by then, I didn’t have many more questions.
One small letdown was the dishwashing sponge, which appeared used. In the end, I chose to buy a new one myself.
Also, since this isn’t a hotel with daily housekeeping, the unit won’t be cleaned during your stay. Knowing that, I got my girls involved in helping to keep the space tidy, which became part of the fun.
Personally, I found the pillows to be a bit too flat for my comfort, but that’s something I often encounter even at hotels; so it wasn’t a major issue.
Our check-in time was scheduled for 3 pm but it was delayed by about an hour as the cleaning team was still wrapping up. I didn’t want to rush them, especially since there wouldn’t be cleaning service once we settled in, so I let them take their time while we waited patiently.
It may also be useful to note that you can spend RM30 at the SR Home Café to enjoy a late check-out (available on a first come, first served).
Conclusion & Final Thoughts
We usually opt for hotels during our trips, but this stay was such a hit with the kids that we’d definitely consider returning, especially when we make use of our LEGOLAND annual passes again. It’s a perfect base for trips to LEGOLAND Malaysia!
While there were a few minor hiccups along the way, the overall experience was fun, comfortable, and made for a memorable playcation!
