Sanpoutei Ramen has opened its third outlet in Singapore at Paragon Shopping Centre, marking its 10th anniversary in the country. Located in the Orchard Road area, the new outlet features a slightly updated interior and introduces two ramen dishes unique to this location. These include the Kombu-Infused Tsukemen as well as a variation of the brand’s Shoyu Ramen, prepared with a broth enhanced by carefully selected ingredients.

Sanpoutei Ramen’s New Paragon Outlet

Sanpoutei Ramen began in Niigata, Japan, in 1967, with a focus on traditional preparation methods, clear broths, and hand-made noodles. Since opening its first Singapore branch in 2014, it has continued to serve ramen in a way that reflects its origins, maintaining consistency in technique and presentation.

The Paragon outlet’s interior includes references to Japanese design, such as a stylised outline of Mt. Fuji and simple lighting features. The layout is intended to offer a relaxed dining environment, drawing loosely from the feel of small ramen shops in Japan, while adapting it for a central shopping district like Orchard Road.

One of the highlights of the Sanpoutei Ramen Paragon Outlet is its exclusive dish: Kombu-Infused Tsukemen. The dish features chilled noodles that have been steeped in a light broth made from Rishiri and Gagome Kombu, two types of seaweed sourced from Hokkaido. Diners begin by dipping the noodles into a soy-based tare. To complete the meal, a warm broth made with Kombu and Bonito — also known as Wari Soup — is added to the remaining tare, turning it into a light soup.

This three-step approach of tasting, dipping, and sipping offers a slightly different way to experience ramen, focusing on each component individually. The broth offered a distinct, flavorful taste with noticeable ginger notes. The noodles had a slight gelatinous coating, which we think is likely from the kombu that it was steeped in. While we didn’t find the broth too strong, it is described by the chef as being on the stronger side, so diners who enjoy bolder flavours may want to give it a try for themselves.

Elevated Shoyu Ramen With A Twist

Shoyu Ramen

For those who appreciate the classics, the Paragon outlet offers its Shoyu Ramen, a dish available at all Sanpoutei locations but with a unique twist exclusive to this outlet. The broth here is made with a special blend of Dried Flying Fish, also known as Ago, and Rishiri Kombu, simmered for over seven hours to bring out clear, refined flavours. Unlike the broth at other locations, which is typically made with sardines and have a stronger, fishier taste, this version allows the shoyu to shine through more clearly.

As with all Sanpoutei Shoyu Ramen, it consists of the signature house-made noodles in a rich umami broth, topped with tender Chashu, fresh spinach, bamboo shoots, nori, and a slow-marinated Ajitsuke Tamago with a soft, golden centre. While we don’t have a strong preference between the original version and the Paragon-exclusive broth, we found this bowl particularly enjoyable for its balanced flavours and the clarity of the broth.

The Sanpoutei Ramen outlet at Paragon offers a combination of traditional favourites and newer, exclusive dishes. With its updated menu and relaxing atmosphere, it provides a comfortable setting for anyone looking to enjoy a bowl of well-prepared ramen. Whether you’re a fan of the classics or interested in trying something new, the outlet caters to a variety of tastes and is one that is worth a visit.
