Of course, the “Water Cycle” refers to the how water circulates around the Earth’s atmosphere, changing form from liquid running through rivers into the ocean and being turned into a vapour to form clouds before precipitating back down to the ground as rain. It can even take on a solid form as ice and glaciers.
The Water Cycle at the Jacob Ballas Children’s Garden Water Playground
While you won’t find ice caps at the Jacob Ballas Children’s Garden water play area, you will find plenty of engaging fun for kids.
The splash pad has a variety of play equipment.
Kids can run through the spray tunnel created by red, yellow and green arches resembling the rainbow.
A huge water bucket is suspended up in the air sway back and forth as it fills up with water. The bucket then tip over releasing a torrent of water like a massive thunderstorm.
The theme of rain is also emphasised by the open umbrellas perched up on tall green poles.
Low water fountains shoot up from the ground, creating a flow of water that meanders across the Jacob Ballas Children’s Garden water play area just like a mini river.
Little mounds pop up across the rubber floor. These almost seem like little mountains, a contrast to the river valley where the river is flowing.
There are also little play features like a “volcano” with water bubbling up and an orange starfish and turtle play elements lurking around as well. Kids can spin the green buttons to get the water to flow in different directions. This resembles the runoff from the mountains leading to the rivers and lakes.
In addition, one of the naturalistic elements found at the Jacob Ballas Children’s Garden water play area are large sand-coloured boulders. And some of these have water jets shooting out from them too!
Water fountains can be activated using these buttons.
There are also logs around the perimeter of the water play area that act as seating spots – either for kids who are weary from all the water play or for parents and caregivers who may be supervising the kids.
Changing Areas and Shower Facilities
For families and kids who are making their way to the water playground at Jacob Ballas Children’s Garden, it is also useful to know that there are some changing facilities – separate ones for boys and girls at the playground.
There are also outdoor showers available. We found the water pressure quite weak, perhaps ideal for the children to take a light shower before changing.
Learning more about The Water Cycle
For inquisitive kids who may wish to learn more about The Water Cycle, there are helpful boards that provide more information about how water moves through the different phases and its different forms. The boards also have lights, narration and a song to teach little ones about the water cycle!
The information boards are cutely illustrated to make it easy to explain to kids about The Water Cycle. They come with little flip boards for little ones to discover more and it doesn’t shy away from using the proper terms such as condensation and evapotranspiration too!
Water Play Amongst Nature
We certainly enjoy and appreciate the new water play area at Jacob Ballas Children’s Garden. The little ones had a splash dipping in the water and even submerging most of their body in the deepest parts.
As parents, we loved how the variety of play zones provided all children – regardless of age an opportunity to have water fun chasing the water spouts, dipping, feeling the rocks, navigating the little streams.
Set amidst the lush natural surrounds of the garden at the Bukit Timah core of the Singapore Botanic Gardens, it is a great way for kids to enjoy the outdoor and cool down amidst nature. The water play area is the work of playground provider CT Art.
