Upon registration, all participants have to don an apron and a bandanna. Parents and children were instantly transformed into Japanese Chefs, looks-wise. They were also introduced to the tools and ingredients used such as – flour, water, rolling pin, scraper and taught to keep their work station clean.

2. Kneading Dough & Rolling Them Out

Kneading Dough & Rolling Them Out

It’s a novel experience making dumplings from scratch. After mixing flour and water, the outcome was magical – it formed dough. Upon further kneading, the pliable dough could be rolled out after a resting period. This was a wonderful way of honing the fine motor skills as well as training the patience of the kids as they attempt to roll out the dough into a circular shape.

3. Making Gyozas

Making Gyozas

Folding the Gyoza was probably the most tricky part of the workshop. First the kids had to place the fillings on the Gyoza skin and then proceed to wrap and shape them. Too much filling results in a bursting Gyoza while too little filling meant a bland-tasting Gyoza.
Hands-on learning and experimentation is the best way to progress and gain confidence!

4. Making Ramen

After completing the Gyozas, each group of participants learnt to work with a noodle cutting machine. This meant a chance for teamwork as parents and children had different duties in managing the dough and turning the knob to flatten or cut the dough.

5. Taste Test

Taste Test

What better way to end the workshop than to taste the final product! The rewards were pan-fried Gyozas and noodles served in a rich broth! We could see the smiles of satisfaction as the chefs slurped their bowls of ramen.

In addition to making Ramen and Gyozas, the children also had the chance to play on the Gachapon machine. Toys are always a winner. They also took home a personalised certificate with a family picture. We appreciated this family-bonding experience and are definitely keen to make our own Gyozas together at home.
