Amazing and Interesting Axolotl Facts for Kids

The axolotl is an amphibian. Other amphibians include frog and toads and they are at home both on land and in the water.

Even though they are amphibians, axolotls spend most of their lives in the water and cannot stay out of the water for long periods of time.

Like other amphibians, axolotls have limbs. They use their legs to walk around in the water, making use of the water buoyancy to carry their body weight.

2. Gills instead of Lungs

The reason why axolotls have a hard time living on land is because they breath through gills. Other amphibians like frogs and toad undergo metamorphosis from young to mature animals. As tadpoles, they have gills but when they reach adulthood, their gills have changed to lungs.

Axolotls do not undergo the same metamorphosis as frogs and toads. Instead, even though they do have lungs and can breath through their skin, they keep their gills all the way to adulthood. The gills remain the way that they breath even as adults.

In order to survive on land, they have to keep their bodies moist and face the risk of drying out. They therefore prefer to remain in an environment with a steady flow of water to keep from getting dehydrated.

This is a trait known as neoteny.

5. Ability to Grow Back Their Limbs

Perhaps the most fascinating ability of the axolotl is its ability to grow back its limbs. This amazing trait allows an axolotl that loses an arm, leg, tail, lower jaw and even its brain. What’s more, all this is done without any permanent scarring.

This uncanny ability has led scientists to study the animal to try and unlock how it accomplishes this trick. The aim of this scientific study is in hope that it can lead to potential medical advancements.
