When the school holidays come around, many parents worry that their children will end up stuck in front of the TV or iPad the whole day long.

Thankfully, for parents who wish to keep their kids active during the school holidays, ActiveSG offers sports camps that provide a chance for kids to learn a new sport and get moving around as well.

ActiveSG is a national movement by Sport Singapore that aims to provide opportunities for everyone to experience and share the joys of sports. Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents can sign up as ActiveSG members and receive FREE ActiveSG $100 upon verification (valid for a limited period), which can be used to offset the payment (up to 30%) for programmes.

During the school holidays, kids can take part in programmes, workshops and camps that introduce to everything from inline skating to football to tennis. These are conducted at sports centres around Singapore and most cater to children from seven years old and older, even though there are activities open to children as young as three years old.

Little Day Out spoke with the team from ActiveSG Sector 1 to find out a bit more about the ActiveSG School Holiday Sports Programmes.

Little Day Out: When did ActiveSG start having sports programmes for kids?
ActiveSG Sector 1: ActiveSG first launched school holiday programmes in Nov 2013. We wanted to provide a platform for kids to try out new sports, make new friends as well as learn the spirit of teamwork and excellence.

LDO: How would the children be grouped and taught the various sports?
ActiveSG Sector 1: Participants will be grouped based on level of competency so that the program will be able to further value add to their existing skills for the various sports. On top of that, if the group is too big, participants will then be grouped according to the various age groups.

LDO: Who are the coaches?
ActiveSG Sector 1: We engage certified coaches from the National Sports Academy, private companies as well as private coaches for our holiday programmes.

LDO: Are any sports suited for sporty or not as sporty kids?
ActiveSG Sector 1: All our programmes aim to attract both kids who are not as sporty and those who are sporty, thus, all sports are recommended as the choice is largely based on their preference and interests.

LDO: What would be a good first sport to introduce to five-year-old
ActiveSG Sector 1: A good sport would be Basketball, Futsal, Table Tennis or KpopX Fitness as these are less strenuous and help to develop motor skills.
