What is an “Arboretum”? We came across this word as we were walking around Yishun Park. After a quick Google search, we found out that an Arboretum is a collection of trees. Yishun Park is home to the first Dipterocarp Arboretum, a family of rainforest trees, in Singapore.

What would be of more interest to most parents is that Yishun Park is also now home to a large new children’s playground (near the junction of Yishun Ring Road and Yishun Avenue 11) that opened in the fourth quarter of 2012.

Overview

This well-shaded playground is full of adventure play equipment. Here, in what used to be an old rubber plantation, there is a bit of something for kids of all ages.

The older kids will gravitate toward the rope obstacle course at the far end of the playground. Traverse a swinging bridge, scale a flappy “Jacob’s ladder” and criss-cross other rope obstacles. These are just some of the things that will challenge the older kids. There is even a dome-shaped net structure for kids to climb.

RopeMoving away from the ropes, slides built into the terrain lead to a sand pit where seesaws, swings and a netted merry-go-round await.

The playground is a welcomed addition to Yishun Park and makes a great new place in the north of Singapore where parents can bring their kids for a little day out.

And of course, once you are done at the playground, there is always the Arboretum too.
