Just before 8 pm on Monday evening, a solo violinist played out the melody of Home from the balcony of Shangri-La’s Rasa Sentosa Resort & Spa.

This poignant moment, ahead of an initiative to applaud for Singapore’s healthcare workers at 8 pm, was made even more so as Shangri-La’s Rasa Sentosa Resort & Spa is one of the hotels where Singapore returnees from overseas are staying out their self-isolation periods. Many of the returnees are sons and daughters who have been abroad studying or working but who have returned home, back to Singapore, in light of the COVID-19 outbreak.

The violinist was 22-year-old Jaz Loh, a third-year dentistry student at Newcastle University in England. She had returned to Singapore on 26 March 2020 with the assistance of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Singapore Airlines.

Home at Shangri-La’s Rasa Sentosa Resort & Spa

The Shangri-La’s Rasa Sentosa Resort & Spa hotel block was aglow with blue lights under the balcony. Others at the hotel also came out to their balconies to listen to the stirring melody.

The song Home, written by Dick Lee and originally sung by Kit Chan, already holds a special place in the hearts of many Singaporeans. That evening, the song took on even more weight as a reminder for Singapore and Singaporeans to stay united together in the face of the current crisis.

This is Home, Truly

Here are the lyrics of home and you can watch the video of the special moment below.

Whenever I am feeling low
I look around me and I know
There’s a place that will stay within me
Wherever I may choose to go
I will always recall the city
Know every street and shore
Sail down that river which brings us life
Winding through my Singapore

CHORUS
This is home, truly
Where I know I must be
Where my dreams wait for me
Where that river always flows
This is home, surely
As my senses tell me
This is where I won’t be alone
For this is where I know it’s home.

When there are troubles to go through
I look around and start anew
For there’s comfort in the knowledge
That home’s about its people too
So we’ll build our dreams together
Just like we’ve done before
Just like that river which brings us life
There’ll always be Singapore

And just before 8pm the violin played. Home. Poignant for those returned home and waiting to go home. A special thank you to the guest who gave us, and fellow guests this breathtaking and beautiful moment. #sgunited #shn
