It is beginning to look a lot like Christmas at the Flower Dome, Gardens by the Bay. The last display of the year, Poinsettia Wishes 2019 ushers in Nordic vibes under the creative direction of Ambassador of Denmark to Singapore, Her Excellency Dorte Bech Vizard.

This year, the Flower Dome exudes hints of architecture from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, along with festive-looking plants. Decorative displays also provide a glimpse of a wintery Christmas in the North.

Welcome to the North

Poinsettia Wishes 2019Welcoming visitors to Poinsettia Wishes 2019 is the family hearth. However, the cosy spot beside a stone fireplace has been occupied by wizen-looking gnomes, known as Nisse.

These friendly folk of Scandinavian folklore can be found all over Poinsettia Wishes 2019. They add a nice magical touch to the festive floral display.

Reindeer & Gnomes

Display at the Flower Field, Flower Dome, November, December 2019At the centre of the Flower Field is a sleigh drawn by reindeer who are magically taking flight. At the reins is not Santa Claus but two Nisse.

Poinsettia 2019 at Gardens by the BayThe field under the sleigh is blanketed with poinsettia.

Christmas PlantsBesides poinsettias, other “Christmas-y” looking plants, such as holly, are also on display at Poinsettia Wishes.

Nisse at Gardens by the BayHowever, it is easy to get distracted by the gosh-darn-too-cute-looking gnomes who seem to be everywhere!

Reindeer StationAmongst the various displays, we especially enjoyed the Reindeer Station. Resembling an airport, complete with departure timing boards, it captures the whimsy and light-heartedness of the festive, year-end season.

The Reindeer Station display is modelled after the Vennesla Library and Culture House in Norway. The Norwegian building has warm wood tones – a distinctive feature of Scandinavian design – and a rib concept, architectural stylings reflected in the Reindeer Station.

Nisse Choir, Gardens by the BayAs you leave the Flower Dome, do spend some time listening to the choir of Nisse singing, and take away some of the festive spirit with you.
