My Tree House, the world’s first green library for kids, is set to open on 31 May 2013 at the Central Public Library.

Announced a year ago in May 2012, My Tree House is the joint effort of National Library Board and City Development Limited.

Green All Round

Construction of My Tree House is guided by green principles and these have influenced its design, infrastructure and use of sustainable materials, and even the programmes it offers. By expounding green principles, it is hoped that children visiting My Tree House will be inspired to explore and learn the importance of caring for the environment.

Located within the Children Section at Central Public Library, it was previously announced that My Tree House will create an enchanted forest ambience with a treehouse structure constructed out of recycled material as its centrepiece. There will be fun spaces for hands-on learning, as well as games, storytelling and craft-making sessions tailored to children between the ages of 4 and 12.

70,000 books will be housed within My Tree House and about 30% of these will cover green topics including animals, plants, water resources, environment and climate change.

Renovations have been underway at the Children Section of the Central Public Library since 4 February 2013.

The re-opening of the Central Public Library’s Children Section as My Tree House on 31 May 2013 is also timely as the date marks the end of the second school term and start of the June school holidays.

The Central Public Library is located at 100 Victoria Street, Singapore 188064. Opening hours are 10.00 am to 9.00 pm daily.
