Take a journey through the years at Community Garden Festival 2019 from 1 to 3 November 2019. This third edition of the biennal event brings together garden displays which look back on Singapore’s gardening journey and projects which aim to inspire the aspiring home gardener. The event at Jurong Lake Gardens includes free activities for families.

Gardening through the Years

The centrepiece of Community Garden Festival 2019 is an outdoor display put together by more than 100 Community in Bloom gardeners and ambassadors from the five Community Development Councils.

Based on the theme “Gardening through the Years”, the display takes a reflective look at the evolution of gardening trends in Singapore from the 1960s to the present day.

Outdoor Display at Community Garden Festival 2019The “Early Singapore” segment incorporates old school features like the yellow and orange bus stop along with the stone tables commonly found in older heartland blocks. Plant varieties are those which were commonly planted when Singapore’s vision was to be a Garden City.

Community Garden Festival 2019 Display“Modern Singapore” reflects more recent trends with more delicate plants and lush vertical columns to represent the establishment of world-class gardens and move towards high-rise gardening.

Biophilic elementsIn the last segment of the outdoor display, “Present Singapore”, the display reflects the shift towards a biophilic City in a Garden. Creating spaces to bring people closer to nature, the elements here include bee hotels and nature play structures such as a tee-pee and low planks.

Such biophilic features can be found in parks such as HortPark.

Gardeners’ Showcase

Together a sense of the future of gardening, head to the indoor Gardener’s Showcase tent.

Indoor display at Community Garden Festival 2019On display are “showflats” which present ideas of how plants can be integrated into Singapore homes through the use of terrariums and aquasacpes.

If the displays remind you of an IKEA showroom, that’s because it has been setup in partnership with the Swedish furniture giant.
