Pre-schoolers at NurtureStars Child Care were treated to high-energy song-and-dance when Science Centre Singapore introduced KidsSTOP’s five mascots and theme song at the SAFRA Mount Faber centre this morning.

Played by real people, the five KidsSTOP mascots are Jo (short for Joey), Max, Pepper, Win and Belle.

Jo, the group’s leader, sports a red cap and a backpack full of gear. Max is a cheerful, gentle giant and the muscle of the group. Pepper is a brainy but quirky girl who often challenges the collective wisdom of the group while Win is the group’s sporty and mischievous prankster. The last member of the group is Belle, a cute and precocious girl whose closest confidant is her toy dinosaur, Rex.

Together, the mascots will represent KidsSTOP, the new children’s science centre for children between 18 months to 8 years old.

One of the roles of the mascots will be to interact with children in fun ways in order to make science more accessible to them. The group demonstrated this during the launch when they had the children at the NurtureStars Child Care dancing along and responding enthusiastically while learning about dinosaurs.

A/Prof Lim Tit Meng, Chief Executive, Science Centre Singapore said, “KidsSTOP will provide an opportunity for young children to play with science and learn along the way. A child’s imagination has the power to inspire and change the world. That’s what our five mascots represent – KidsSTOP is their world where they get to explore, discover, imagine and dream what they want to be.”

Also unveiled today was the KidsSTOP theme song. Jointly produced by Singapore Polytechnic students and Science Centre Singapore, the catchy song was selected from 18 entries received in response to a songwriting competition.

KidsSTOP is scheduled to open on 6 June 2014 and will be housed at the Omni-Theatre building. It will also roll out various educational programmes to support the government’s drive to enhance early childhood education in Singapore.
