Exhibition From London’s Natural History Museum Comes To Singapore
The Natural History Museum in London has a history dating back to 1881. With over 80 million specimens in its care, the museum has one of the most significant natural history collections in the world.
200 objects from the Natural History Museum have been chosen for Treasures of the Natural World at ArtScience Museum in Singapore. The exhibition will take visitors on a journey through man’s quest to understand the natural world.
Highlights of the exhibition include a handwritten extract from Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species, a Martian meteorite, a mysterious ‘cursed’ amethyst, and a selection of Alfred Russel Wallace’s collection of insects from his Malay Archipelago expedition to Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia.
Treasures of the Natural World at ArtScience Museum
Treasures of the Natural World at ArtScience Museum will be set across five themed galleries.
The exhibition begins with the story of the origins of Natural History Museum and Sir Hans Sloane whose private collection of more than 400,000 natural history specimens formed the nucleus of the British Museum which later spun off the Natural History Museum.
Visitors will learn how specimens collected have influenced scientific minds such as Darwin and Wallace. They will also be able to find out more about early pioneer explorers and how the environment impacts nature’s diversity.
A giant ground sloth and sabre-toothed cat will be among the exhibits on display.
The exhibition concludes with a look at the work of the Natural History Museum today. This includes predicting and mitigating the impact of climate change and managing natural resources.
Families can look forward to interactive exhibits designed to pique a child’s curiosity about the natural world and a treasure hunt for younger visitors.
