Someone once said, “You can’t buy happiness, but you can buy ice cream. And that’s kind of the same thing.”
It used to be just the simple ding-a-ling-a-ling ice cream man that we would run to for a slice of happiness. From his sidecar beside his motorcycle, we were mighty delighted with the Magnolia ice cream sandwiched between pastel-coloured loti (bread) or wafer biscuits.
Or Mum and Dad would bring us down to the old Plaza Singapura for that “earthquake” of a Swensens ice cream, where we would clamour for different flavours.
Today, the ice cream scene has changed dramatically. The old-timers are still around, but we now have a proliferation of homemade ice cream parlours in almost every nook and cranny, with new ones popping up almost monthly.
At present, we’re talking about a whopping 30 plus ice cream brands with over 90 outlets dishing out Instagram-worthy servings! We’re not even counting specialist ice cream products like the naughty-sounding Neh Neh Pops that are stocked at various retail points, nor some of the yoghurt and gelato specialists.
