Kids can get to know Georgette Chen, a first-generation Singapore artist, at the National Gallery Singapore’s latest interactive artwork, An Artist’s Tropical Landscape.

This new space allows children to see the world of fruit through the eyes of Georgette Chen, one of the pioneering artists in the Nanyang style of art.

Georgette Chen: A Pioneer of the Nanyang-style

Born in Zhejiang, China in 1906, Georgette Chen was the daughter of a diplomat. She was first exposed to art in the United States before studying in Paris, France.

Later, she settled in Shanghai before travelling around Asia, eventually moving to Penang, Malaysia and then Singapore in the 1950s. From 1954 to 1980, Georgette taught part-time at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. This was also an artistically significant period for her and in 1982, she received the Cultural Medallion for her contributions to visual art in Singapore.
