One staple of Japanese cuisine is Japanese curry rice and we’ve been told that one of the must-try restaurants is Maji Curry, which has locations at Novena’s Square 2 and also Funan along North Bridge road.

We made our way down to the Square 2 branch, the brand’s original outlet in Singapore, to give Maji Curry a try.

What Makes Maji Curry Stand Out?

Japanese curry rice can be found all around Singapore. However, Maji Curry hails from Japan and came to fame by winning the Kanda Curry Grand Prix, the biggest Kanda Curry competition in Japan, all the way back in 2018. It also won again in 2022.

Since then, the brand expanded beyond Japan’s shores and eventually made its way to Singapore in 2022 and its second branch has opened in 2025.

While our usual go-to spot for Japanese curry rice is Coco Ichibanya, we were excited to finally be able to give Maji Curry a try.

The outlet at Square 2 has a rather narrow seating area and the walls that are painted a deep red colour. There is also an outdoor seating area at the Square 2 outlet.

Ordering at Maji Curry

Ordering at Maji Curry is done via ordering kiosks at the front of the outlet.

There are plenty of different variations of Japanese curry available at Maji Curry with the staples of pork cutlet, chicken cutlet and hamburger steak all part of the menu. Some other interesting variations on Japanese curry dishes included Eggplant Curry Rice, Cream Croquett Curry Rice and Spinach Curry Rice. There was also a limited time Soft Shell Crab Curry while we were there.

It is also possible to get the curry rice with cheese sauce on top.

We decided to stick to the classics and ordered the tonkatsu curry rice and a hamburger steak curry rice.

Customisation options included the spice level with Levels 1 to 3 and a Non Spicy option too. We also made it a set meal.

The set meal includes a bowl of salad and a drink.

The tonkatsu curry rice arrived with the crispy pork cutlet sitting on top of the bed of rice and surrounded by the curry sauce. the Japanese curry was rice and and comforting with a deep, savoury flavour.

The curry at Maji Curry was deliciously velvety and had a nice level of spice without being overly spicy. Instead of being laced with extra potatoes and carrots, the curry was presented on its own to let it shine.

The curry was similarly satisfying for the the hamburger steak curry rice that we ordered. However, personally, we felt that the hamburger was quite processed and was not as succulent as we would have liked it to be. The next time around, we will probably stick with either the pork or chicken cutlet instead (with the cheese sauce).

Maji Curry powder

Here is one tip. If you are not sure if you handle the spice level of Maji Curry, you can order a lower spice level and add on the heat using the Maji Curry powder that is available at the time. This way, you can regular the level of heat in the dish.

fried shallots and pickles

Also, be sure to ask for the fried shallots and pickles. The shallots add a bit of variation to the texture of the curry dish.
