Build experience of LEGO 80117 Good Fortune

LEGO 80117 Good Fortune consists of 8 bags of LEGO pieces. Bags 1-3 contain parts for the gold ingots centrepiece; Bag 4 contains parts for the scroll and paintbrush; Bag 5 contains parts for the vase; and Bags 6-8 contain parts for the fan. As these elements are all separate, you can choose to build in any order you want, which adds to the fun and flexibility of the experience.

Two separate instruction booklets are given (for Bags 1-4 and Bags 5-8), which makes this set perfect for a family build – because after all, isn’t Lunar New Year all about family togetherness? In fact, even my 3 year old was able to assemble some parts of the build, with some guidance.

Starting with Bags 1-3, we worked on the gold ingot centrepiece. First of all, we constructed the base plate on which the various elements of this decoration will eventually sit. Next, we assembled the very realistic-looking gold ingots, as well as a bright and cheery persimmon.

Next was the vase, which features an ornate qinghua porcelain print. The vase contains three sprigs of fortune red fruit berries, which in turn are decorated with a pair of “春联” (spring couplets) printed with well wishes for the new year.

Next up, the festive red scroll featuring the mandarin word “春” (meaning “spring”), complete with a bamboo calligraphy brush.

Saving the best for the last, we finally come to the fan. What’s interesting is that, after completing the base of the fan, there are two decorative build options – either a gold-and-pink blossom design, or a design featuring two blue magpies and sprigs of pink blossoms. The parts for either option are conveniently packed in two separate bags (bags 7 and 8).

We opted for the latter – no regrets after seeing how cute the little blue magpies are!

Once all the elements are completed, they can be attached to the base plate, creating a cohesive centerpiece that would look great in any home. Of course, the various elements can also be detached, creating limitless options for your own unique festive decorations.

Review of LEGO 80117 Good Fortune

The details of LEGO 80117 Good Fortune are simply exquisite, from the origami-esque birds and sweet spring blossoms on the luxurious fan (that actually ripples when flapped, just like a real fan!), to the very realistic bamboo paintbrush accompanying the scroll, to the adorable mini “春联” (spring couplets) adorning the berry sprigs in the vase. And can we please take a moment to marvel over how LEGO even makes white plastic look practically indistinguishable from an expensive porcelain vase?!

Building LEGO 80117 Good Fortune with the kids who were full of questions about the different elements was also an educational and culturally-enriching experience. “What is that word on the scroll – is it Chinese?” led to an explanation of why spring is anticipated and celebrated in Chinese culture. And “What are those gold things??” prompted a discussion on the many symbols of wealth and good fortune replete in Lunar New Year decorations.

LEGO 80117 Good Fortune is the perfect family activity to get everyone into the festive spirit and talking about Chinese customs and traditions. At the same time, it makes for a beautiful and lavishly-detailed centrepiece, sure to be the talk of all the guests you’ll be hosting during this festive season.  So “huat” are you waiting for, let’s get building!
