Google Interland is a free, web-based game that makes learning the ways of the web a fun, engaging and hands-on experience. Kids can play their way to being Internet Awesome by going on an online adventure that puts the important lessons of digital safety into practice with four challenging and interactive games.
Kids can be fearless explorers of the Interlands and help the adorable Internauts as they go on a quest to deny hackers, sink phishers, one-up cyberbullies and outsmart oversharers. There are a total of four islands that kids can explore: Kind Kingdom, Reality River, Mindful Mountain and Tower of Treasure.
The Internet is a powerful amplifier that can be used to spread positivity or negativity. Through the fun game in the Kind Kingdom, kids are invited to spread kindness to others while also learning how to stop bullies by blocking and reporting them.
It’s important to help kids become aware that people and situations online aren’t always as they seem. Discerning between what is real and fake is an important lesson when teaching online safety. Kids will learn this by playing a game to cross the river by answering questions.
Good and bad news travels fast online, thus learning how to choose who to share information with is important. The game in Mindful Mountain gives kids scenarios in which they will have to choose with whom it is appropriate to share information such as “an invite to a school dance”, “a funny picture of their sibling” and “a personal password”.
Tower of Treasure
Personal privacy and security are just as important online as they are offline. Safeguarding valuable information helps kids avoid damaging their devices, reputations, and relationships. In this game, kids are tasked to collect information by navigating through the map and collect icons while avoiding hackers. After that, they will have to build their tower and strengthen it by choosing the most secure password.
Quizzes and Discussion Questions
At the end of each game, kids are further challenged to think deeper and answer questions related to the topic on which they have just touched on. This is done through the fill in the blank questions along with cute animations to reinforce the lesson. Parents or guardians can facilitate this process by guiding the process of answering the questions.
We enjoyed the resource of Interland as the animation, sounds and questions were challenging as they were educational. Click the link here to explore Interland for yourself.
