Have you seen how oceans glow and wonder about bioluminescence blooms? Glowing Oceans is now at Science Centre Singapore from 3 November onwards. It is Asia’s first full-scale living bioluminescence exhibition. See them first hand and even try “touching” the live dinoflagellates – a type of marine plankton!
Glowing Oceans at Science Centre Singapore – Our Experience
Located at Hall C, Glowing Oceans is a living bioluminescence exhibition that has a fully dark-adapted environment. Swirl live dinoflagellates at the touch tanks and wade through glowing water, play games and see the science behind the living light up close.
First, wash your hands thoroughly with soap at the hand-washing stations. Then put on the booties to protect your footwear from getting wet.
YEAR-END CAMPS: Give Your Child's Language Skills A Boost With Themed Camps
Enter the area with the touch tanks. We met an aquaculturist who introduced us to the marine plankton from California. He shared he had been growing them for fifteen years!
Visitors might not be able to capture proper images of the dinoflagellates but they can be seen with the naked eye as you swirl them in the water.
Then we waded through the water and tried our best to spot the dinoflagellates. We were told that there would be more as they reproduce in a few weeks. Keep your eyes peeled or use your hand to swirl for a glimpse of the lit organisms.
Dry Exhibits at Glowing Oceans
After the experiencing the wet exhibits and staying dry mostly, we proceeded to the gallery with dry exhibits.
Here you can see Dimitri’s Desk. He was a marine biology researcher who studied how organisms make light. There were field instruments, glass specimen, lab notes and more.
Kids and kidults alike could also play a game and chase the glow! Highest scorer eats the most blooms and also escapes the predator.
