History lovers have something to look forward to on 18 May 2013. From that date, Singaporeans and PRs will be able to enjoy free admission to 10 museums and heritage centres around Singapore. This includes access to the permanent collections at the National Museum of Singapore, Singapore Philatelic Museum, Asian Civilisations Museum, as well as heritage institutions such as the Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall and Malay Heritage Centre.
In doing so, the National Heritage Board (NHB) aims to provide citizens and PRs greater access to Singapore’s heritage.
The launch of the free admissions is in conjunction with the NHB’s Children’s Season 2013, as well as International Museum Day. This follows a month of free admission to eight NHB museums in August 2012 and an earlier pilot conducted in August 2011 as well.
In the case of special exhibitions, where entry charges apply, NHB will continue to offer free admission for citizens and PRs who are students, teachers, senior citizens and NSFs as well as children 6 years and younger.
Museums with Free Admission for Citizens and PRs
From 18 May 2013, free admission applies to the:
i. Singapore Art Museum – Home to large collection of Southeast Asian art and two learning galleries.
ii. National Museum of Singapore – Journey into Singapore’s past at the History Gallery and Living Gallery.
iii. Asian Civilisations Museum – Discover the backstory of different races that came to settle in Singapore.
iv. Peranakan Museum – Learn about the unique culture of the Straits-born Peranakans.
v. Singapore Philatelic Museum – See the world through stamps and revolving children-friendly exhibitions.
vi. Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall – Trace the history behind Sun Yat Sen association with Singapore.
vii. Malay Heritage Centre – Uncover the Malay heritage and traditions at this centre found at Sultan Gate.
viii. Reflections at Bukit Chandu – Relive the bravery of the Malay Regiment that defended Pasir Panjang in World War II.
Two other institutions slated to open in 2015, the National Art Gallery and the Indian Heritage Centre, will also be covered under the scheme.
The Memories at Old Ford Factory is not covered under the free admissions programme.
