Wonder what the future will look like?

The folks at the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART) and the National University of Singapore would like to offer you a glimpse into it.

From 23 Oct to 1 Nov 2014, Thursday to Saturday, 8 am to 2 pm, two driverless vehicles will be available for the public’s use, free of charge, at the Chinese and Japanese Gardens.

Fitted out with $30,000 worth of technology, but no steering wheel, the two buggies, dubbed DJ (Driverless Jockey) and BX (Buggy Xtreme) will ferry up to three passengers each per trip around the two gardens. Through the use of laser sensors and real-time route planning, they will navigate their ways around 10 stations located around a 3.65 km path in the Gardens.

Travelling up to a driverless speed of 10km/h, researchers on electric bicycles will trail the autonomous buggies to oversee the safety of passengers. Persons under 18 are requested to be accompanied by an adult.

The driverless buggy trial is part of the Smart and Connected JLD Pilots and Trials initiative, which was launched by the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA), in collaboration with URA, EDB and other government agencies such as BCA, HDB, JTC, LTA, NEA, NLB, NParks and SLA. It showcases the concept of “Mobility-on-Demand”, a new concept where lightweight electric vehicles can be used to provide transportation around the city.
