Discover Through Dialects: Kreta Ayer Heritage Tours Uncovers The District's History

The National Heritage Board has launched new Discover Through Dialects: Kreta Ayer Heritage Tours. Running from 26 March 2022 till August, these tours will be conducted in Cantonese, Teochew and Hokkien by volunteer guides from NHB’s pool of docents.

The Discover Through Dialects: Kreta Ayer Heritage Tours are targeted at seniors and families with members who are primarily dialect speaking.

The tour aims to highlight five intangible cultural heritage elements that were brought to the area by early Chinese immigrants. These elements, comprising Chinese opera, nanyin music, Chinese puppetry, Chinese painting and calligraphy, and tea drinking and appreciation.

Participants on the tour will visit key landmarks within the Kreta Ayer district, including the iconic red and white Tong Ah building and Cundhi Gong temple. They will also learn about the communities who lived in the historic district.

Discover Through Dialects: Kreta Ayer Heritage Tours Schedule

Discover Through Dialects: Kreta Ayer Heritage Tours will take place monthly from 26 March to 27 August 2022.

The schedule of tours is as folllows:

26 March – Cantonese
30 Apri – Teochew
28 May – Hokkien
25 June – Cantonese
30 July – Teochew
27 August – Hokkien

Tickets can be booked through Peatix on a first-come, first-served basis at $5.00 each. Each tour can accommodate up to 15 participants and is approximately 1 hour 30 minutes long.
