But making time for some time to exercise could make a positive impact on your moods and energy levels. We speak to Class 95 DJ Sophie Gollifer on how she makes time for her family and sports, and why being kind to yourself is so important.

Tell us about yourself and your girls.

When I first learnt I would be raising girls I was really worried. It feels like a huge responsibility, especially in the current climate. I think it’s the time of the woman! But challenge accepted!

I try to be a positive role model for them, to help shape them into strong little ladies while letting them be their unique selves too. They are young, but definitely pack a punch and we have so much fun together!

Bowie is 3 and has the sweetest heart and loves all things pink (this is after I said no pink when she was born!). Coco is 2 and is the biggest firecracker! She is so serious but funny and when she throws a tantrum, watch out!

I really love being a mum.

What is a perfect Little Day Out with your family?

A perfect day for us is something active that also gets their curious minds working. They love animals so a day out at the zoo or aquarium has them so excited! So many questions!

(It can be tiring, I won’t lie, but I kind of love it!).

Being active is a big part of my life so I love taking them to the playground or pool as well to burn off some of that never ending energy. Failing which a nice girly walk round the malls for a spot of shopping and of course some brunch after that.

No matter what we do I try to keep them engaged and make every adventure an meaningful one even if it’s to the supermarket (they love this but end up trying to buy everything, help!).

How do you find time to exercise as a busy working mum?

I have always made exercise a priority for my mental and physical wellbeing. I totally understand when other moms or even dads say after a long day of work or caring for children who wants to exercise!? I get it, trust me.

But I find having a consistent plan for this and marking it in my calendar sets me up for sticking to it. I think it’s really important to enjoy doing exercise for YOU because after that 1 hour or less you are ready to tackle the challenges of the day..parenting or otherwise. You also have to give yourself some credit and a little high five when you get a solid workout in!

What are some easy workouts to start off post-partum for mums who haven’t been exercising?

I would say once you’re cleared by your doctor to start exercise ease into it with some brisk walking if you can manage it. I did this until I could jog and built up from there. I had also lost a ton of muscle through my pregnancy so I started with some light Pilates exercises to strengthen up before going back into light weight training. When in doubt, it’s a good idea to ask a trainer so you don’t get hurt and of course listen to your body. Good luck!

It’s been a challenging year. What are some wellness rituals you turn to?

I try to be kind to my body by eating well and getting in regular exercise.

Mentally, I think a big one is to remember you are doing the best you can. Even in the toughest of situations I think gaining perspective by acknowledging what you’re grateful for each day is a good place to start.

It’s been a tough year for so many people and seeing what you have going for you can help bring your mind back and help you ride out the storm.

Any advice for others in difficult circumstances?

Take it day by day and be kind to yourself.

Take time to take care of Self!

Indeed, these are important messages from Sophie! Thank you, Sophie.

It is so critical for busy mums and dads to take time to take care of yourselves, especially in health and fitness. When you feel better, you parent best!

We hope Sophie’s messages would be helpful to anyone who is having a rough time. You are not alone! And as Sophie puts it, being grateful for something each day is a good place to start.
