More about the Public Holidays in Singapore
The public holidays in Singapore reflect the multi-racial and multi-cultural nature of Singapore’s society.
New Year’s Day is a day to start of the brand new year with some quiet time before it starts up for good. It is a way to ease into the new year, especially after the lull that many experience during the year-end vacation time. For others, it may also be a chance to recover from the revelry of New Year’s Eve parties.
Chinese New Year is a major holiday and also known as the Lunar New Year. The date of Chinese New Year is determined by the lunar calendar and each year brings along with it one of the Chinese zodiac animals.
Good Friday is a Christian holiday and it commemorates the death of Jesus Christ. It is followed by Easter Sunday (not a designated Public Holiday) on Sunday.
Hari Raya Puasa, also known as Eid al-Fitr, is a religious festival celebrated by Muslims. It marks the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting that is observed by Muslims.
Labour Day is a day to remember the contributions of workers. It is also known as May Day and acts as a reminder of the rights and solidarity of workers.
Vesak Day is an important holiday in Buddhism as it commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and death of Buddha. On Vesak Day, Buddhists will engage in spiritual and religious activities at the temple and is a time for joy, reflection and peace.
Hari Raya Haji is also known as Eid Al-Adha. It is celebrated on the 10th day of Zulhijjah and marks the completion of the haj pilgrimage to Mecca.
National Day is when Singapore comes together to celebrate as a country. It is marked by the National Day Parade, carnivals and fireworks. One of the popular features of National Day that many look forward to is the National Day flypast.
Deepavali is the Hindu festival of lights. Also known as Diwali, it symbolises the victory of light over darkness and good over evil.
Christmas is a Christian holiday that celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ.
