We gave the McDonald’s Creamy Mushroom Double Cheeseburger, Nori Shoyu Shaka Shaka Chicken McBites and Taro Custard Pie a taste test to find out what it is really like.

McDonald’s Creamy Mushroom Double Cheeseburger Review

McDonald’s Creamy Mushroom Double Cheeseburger Review

When we first received a media release on 1 April that McDonald’s Singapore would be launching a Creamy Mushroom Double Cheeseburger, the first thought to cross our mind was whether it was an April Fools’ joke. Was this “burger” meant to be a challenger to Burger King’s Mushroom Swiss burger, or was this something else?

However, when we stepped into a McDonald’s Singapore outlet 4 April, we were happy to discover it on the menu at the ordering kiosk. Of course, this meant that we had to give it a try.

Creamy Mushroom Double Cheeseburger Review

The Creamy Mushroom Double Cheeseburger that we had came with a single layer of cheese at the bottom, a single patty, a second layer of cheese with some onions, another patty and some sauce before being topped off with the bun.

The creamy mushroom mayo sauce was slightly spicy, which was slightly surprising to us. Frankly, the second layer of cheese had melted well down to and we had to look closely to double check if it was there.

Creamy Mushroom Double Cheeseburger Taste Test

We couldn’t really taste any mushrooms. We also searched hard to find some mushroom pieces in the creamy mushroom mayo. Unfortunately, that turned out to be quite a futile attempt. Instead, the texture and crunch of the onions was predominant in the burger.

Nori Shoyu Shaka Shaka Chicken McBites

Next up was the Nori Shoyu Shaka Shaka Chicken McBites.

These chicken pieces came in a box of nine. Popcorn sized, the Nori Shoyu Shaka Shaka Chicken McBites were made out of real chicken meat instead of processed meat. This was something that we appreciated.

We dutifully put the Chicken McBites into the provided paper bag, mixed in the Nori Shoyu seasoning and gave it all a good shake to coat the chicken bites.

We had high hopes for the Nori Shoyu Shaka Shaka Chicken McBites. Unfortunately, we didn’t like the seasoning. Something about the smell of the seasoning reminded us of herbal soup – which is just weird in a McDonald’s restaurant.

However, the Chicken McBites were okay. The batter could have been crispier. They would  have probably gone better with the McDonald’s chilli sauce though.

Taro Custard Pie

Taro Custard Pie

We rounded off our meal with the Taro Custard Pie. The filling was not overly sweet and what was interesting was that there were chunks of taro inside.

Final Verdict on the Taste Test

The final verdict?

We would have the Creamy Mushroom Double Cheeseburger, even though we couldn’t quite taste the mushrooms. It just tasted like a saucier and slightly spicier version of a cheeseburger to us. There is even a triple cheeseburger version that may be worth a try.

We would pass on the Nori Shoyu Shaka Shaka Chicken McBites because of the seasoning. It was just too much for our olfactory senses. Finally, it is a maybe to the taro pie, if we are in the mood.
