My 9-year-old and I visited Home Baking Day for a parent-child date. We shared our experience making a cake from scratch.

The pastel-coloured workstations, equipment, and shelves provided a soothing and relaxing space for us to start our baking adventure.
There are over 50 dessert recipes to choose from. These include tarts, cream cakes, chiffon cakes, madeleine, cookies, doughnuts and more. We could also see the difficulty level of each recipe and chose one that was suitable for our skill.
Since my child is a strawberry fan, he chose the Strawberry Custard Cream Cheese Chiffon Cake.
Armed with our limited baking experience, making a beautiful cake from scratch seemed like a Herculean task. However, the calm environment, clear instructions on the tablet and helpful staff around made us rise to the challenge.
Our Experience as Noob Cake Bakers
The recipe we chose was a no-bake cake, which meant it was more about assembling than anything else.
I let my 9-year-old take the helm in managing the cake. Other than helping him to collect some tools and ingredients, he did the measuring, pouring, and mixing and also learnt to use the microwave.
With the help of the tablet and the step-by-step instructions, my son was able to complete the task fairly well.
The steps began with preparing the base of the cake. Then it was on to mixing and whipping the cheese mixture and making the jelly. The last step was putting it all together, and decorating with toppings.
The cake would have been impossible to make at home given the sheer amount of ingredients required.
Home Baking Day had everything a baker needed and the studio resembled a dream kitchen. There was a chilled section stocked full of ingredients, and every tool you could need: KitchenAid mixers, turntable, piping tips, ovens, microwave ovens.
We reckon a bake-off can be hosted here – the Great Singapore Bake-off perhaps.
A Sense of Accomplishment & More
Completing the Strawberry Custard Cream Cheese Chiffon Cake was such a wonderful feeling.
Firstly, no cake was ruined given the idiot-proof instructions. I was quite surprised by the outcome given that we had no prior experience making an aesthetically-pleasing cake.
Second, there was no mess to clean up nor dishes to wash, something that would otherwise usually be the pain point in any baking experiment.
My son and I enjoyed ourselves tremendously and we might even be back for more baking sessions.
Tasting our masterpiece, we liked how the dessert was not overwhelmingly sweet. It was perfect for sharing at intergenerational family events!
Instead of purchasing desserts and cakes off the shelf, families can even consider making a cake at Home Baking Day and serve it up at a large family meal for a truly personal touch.
