To celebrate Singapore’s 60th year of independence, The Fullerton Heritage has collaborated with Singaporean artist Yip Yew Chong to recreate nostalgic scenes of The Fullerton Heritage precinct with an installation called “Postcard Stories” to tell stories of Singapore’s evolving cityscape.
The Postcard Stories installation by Yip Yew Chong features 32 metres of hand-painted murals in hues of old postcards, interspersed with three-dimensional pop-up props.
Located at One Fullerton’s Seaview Channel, visitors can try to spot familiar present-day icons hidden within unfamiliar, bygone scenes depicted in old postcards, and in doing so, discover stories from the nation’s past.
The Postcard Stories Installation by Yip Yew Chong
The installation consists of four scenes from around the period of 1960s and 1970s. And, as is the case with Yip Yew Chong’s murals, you can expect spot where you can pose and place yourself into the artworks.

The General Post Office (GPO) scene plays homage to the Fullerton building’s origins and the pivotal role of postal services in connecting people.
Singapore’s Waterfront is a tribute to the bustling waterfront, now the Marina Bay, and its boatsmen and ‘coolies’ whose tireless efforts shaped the city’s early trade. Look out for Yip’s signature cat in this scene.
The Esplanade and Merlion Park is a celebration of the enduring national icon and the place’s transformation over time. Here, those who remember can reminisce about the old Satay Club that used to be found along the Esplanade.
The Postcard Stories installation seeks to foster a deeper appreciation for Singapore’s heritage, encourage exploration of The Fullerton Heritage precinct, and spark a sense of collective identity.
A Personal Memory, Interpretation and Imagination of the Place
“This installation is a personal memory, interpretation and imagination of the place,” said Yip Yew Chong. “By recreating life and spirit of these scenes, I hope visitors can feel like they’ve walked right into old postcards. While the seniors reminisce, the young, tourists and those who have never seen these scenes before can learn about these places, their stories and the larger Singapore story. We’ll all appreciate how much we have changed and how far we have come.”
