Overview of Bayard Presse’s StoryBox, AdventureBox and DiscoveryBox

Bayard Presse is an international publicater of children’s magazines focused on nurturing curiosity and a lifelong love of reading. Their StoryBox, AdventureBox and DiscoveryBox series are well-loved worldwide.

StoryBox is for developing readers ages 3 to 8, contains simple stories with many visuals and just a paragraph of words or two for each page.

AdventureBox is for competent readers 6 to 10, similar to StoryBox with more text, nature-related articles while AdventureBox Max is for slightly older readers ages 9 to 14, with slightly more complex themes. For a larger focus on history, science, world, nature, the DiscoveryBox series is for 7 to 14-year-olds.

Each series has a different focus but all of them have attractive visuals, captivating stories, post-story activities, recipes, experiments and more.

Parent’s Take on the “Story-centric” Magazines

Parent’s Take on the “Story-centric” Magazines

What’s not to like about refreshing content offered on a monthly basis? The different series offers different levels of readers easy access to stories, comics, activity ideas and all the magazines were interesting reads even for adults.

Preschoolers who are starting out on reading will find StoryBox engaging, easy to read with or without aid and certainly be fascinated by the illustrations. There are also comics just for them. Who doesn’t enjoy comics?

Themes are also relevant to current affairs.

Themes are also relevant to current affairs. For instance, DiscoveryBox has a section on how humans have learned to look after one another in the last two thousand years in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic. This is a helpful introduction to general knowledge that each child should develop as they get older. This series has even won Parents’ Choice Gold Award for 2020.

My kids get sucked into the AdventureBox series every time they receive a copy. It is little surprise as to why they love it. Compared to other books, all the series have varied content – a chapter story, something on nature, games, activities. Even if a reluctant fiction reader does not enjoy the chapter story, there are other kinds of content such as comics and follow-up activities to delve deeper into the themes.

Parents will need to take note that content consists of paranormal encounters, difficult topics like childhood cancer which can be tough to navigate. It would be great if parents could read together with their child or just skim through the material and discuss the topics together.
