Now in its fourth year, Got to Move (GTM), Singapore’s nationwide dance movement, is an initiative by the National Arts Council (NAC) to ignite Singaporeans’ interest in dance, and to deepen an appreciation of the art form.

This year, the festival will run for two weeks from 12 to 28 October and features a wide range of ground-up dance programmes for young and old as part of Got to Move ISLANDWIDE. Whether you have two left feet, or come from a long line of prima ballerinas, Got to Move will definitely have something to get you grooving!

Some of this year’s highlights include Singapore’s first social dance and street dance party, an extraordinary co-choreographed piece between a hearing and a hearing-impaired choreographer. To bring the action closer to the public, events will be held in non-traditional dance spaces such as the roof garden of Lot One Shopper’s Mall and a coffee shop in Lengkok Bahru.

There is also Got to Move SPOTLIGHT, a one-day dance carnival to be held at the Civic District on the last day of the festival, Sunday, 28 October.

Got to Move: Get Moving as a Family

If you and your family have been looking to get your grooves back, stop making excuses and make time for a workshop or two. With tons of events lined up, here is a sampling of the great activities you can look forward to moving!

Back to the 70s – A Cross-Generation Journey

Mums, Dads, Grandmas, and Grandpas – this is your time to shine! Teach the young ones a thing or two about disco and share some laughs at The DanceSport Academy’s “Back to the 70s – A Cross Generation Journey” event on Saturday, 13 October 2018.

Break into those blue suede shoes as a family, and pick up some slick moves in this disco-themed workshop! While Mum and Dad are shimmying on the dancefloor after, the children will be kept busy with some arts and crafts. How’s that for a great Saturday night out?

Parent and Child Pas de deux – Singapore Ballet Academy

Established since 1958, the Singapore Ballet Academy (SBA) is Singapore’s oldest and foremost ballet school. With highly respected ballerinas, such as the co-founder of the Singapore Dance Theatre, Goh Soo Khim, having graced the hallowed walkways of the SBA, you know your time there will be truly unforgettable.

Join the SBA on Saturday, 20 October 2018 for an afternoon of parent and child dance partnering, and a spot of arts and crafts too. Learn the basics of classical ballet partnering, also known as pas de deux. Redesign SBA t-shirts and turn them into costumes that you and your child can call your own! This would be a lovely introduction to the world of ballet, and a great opportunity to bond with your child.

I Can Dance to Keith Haring

I Can Dance To Keith Haring is an arts integrated programme which will explore the use of arts and crafts in dance for parents and children. I Can Dance To Keith Haring will combine elements of Hip Hop with pop art by renowned American pop art artist, Keith Haring. This two-hour workshop aims to redefine the children’s appreciation of the arts.

The two weeks of Got to Move ISLANDWIDE programmes will culminate in Got to Move SPOTLIGHT, an immersive and interactive one-day dance carnival held at the Civic District on 28 October, 8.30 am to 12 pm, in conjunction with Car-free Sunday.

Participants of all ages can look forward to fun-filled activities incorporating different dance genres, or simply enjoy themselves at the dance photography exhibition.

Local dance professionals will also capture the imaginative minds of the audiences as they experience dance outside of the conventional performance space. Held in conjunction with Car-Free Sunday SG, Got to Move SPOTLIGHT underpins NAC’s commitment to reinvent and revitalise urban spaces by bringing communities together through the arts.
