Woodlands Health Campus is home to one of the largest murals by artist Yip Yew Chong. Spanning the length of a multi-storey wall beside the drive away, the Woodlands Health mural is a pictorial journey through time and the development of the Woodlands and Marsiling area.

Artist Yip Yew Chong is known for his distinctive style and depictions of days gone by.

The Woodlands Health mural features this distinctive storytelling approach to painting, carrying the narrative of the past and ties the kampong spirit of gotong royong to the present.

The mural is huge and features multiple scenes. These span from kampong scenes to  modern day depictions of the Woodlands Health Campus.

According to an Instagram post by Yip, “There are a lot of details and stories in this large mural!”

While we are sure that he will be sharing about these stories in time to come, it is already so much to see and admire at the large scale mural.

Kampong scenes at the Woodlands Health Mural

Starting from the far right, there are scenes from a kampong. We love how there are friends, or perhaps neighbours, sitting down together outdoors, enjoying jackfruit and durians along with some chatter.

Boys in a treehouse hoist up a basket with a cat and what looks like a younger version of the artist inside.

Happy cat

The Woodlands Health Campus also features a happy cat, smiling next to some pigeons.

Coffee Shop with Friends

The scene then changes to one with a coffee shop where friends sit together enjoying food.

As with many of Yip’s murals, this work is also posable and the artist has left an empty seat for passers-by to take a seat at the table.

Neighbourly Spirit

Above the coffee shop, the neighbourly spirit is alive and well with families sharing with one another. As one online commentator janaspiritdy put it, Yip was able to “capture the essence of our multi-cultural identity” in the mural.

Woodlands Health Campus and its Healing Garden

After another tree, the scene gives away to a depiction of the Woodlands Health Campus and its Healing Garden. Along side the campus, other landmarks in the area such as Christ Church Secondary School and Masjid Yusof Ishak are captured side by side.

Dr Mohan

The mural also shows nurses and doctors hard at work and highlights a Dr Mohan. We suspect that Dr Mohan is not just a fictional character and there is a story behind his depiction. We look forward to the artist sharing more details in time to come.
