You would expect to see birds while visiting Bird Paradise, right? But how about an encounter with whales, dinosaurs and more? You can do so – in virtual reality, at least – at the Wild Explorer VR Experience.

A collection of 12 egg-shaped pods can be found in a corner of Ocean Network Express Penguin Cove at Bird Paradise.
Rather than belonging to a feathered flock, these egg pods actually serve as a portal into a virtual reality world.

The Wild Explorer VR Experience is an indoor attraction at Bird Paradise where, for a fee, both adults and children can be transported to another world.
Animal Encounters in Virtual Reality
After paying the fees for the Wild Explorer VR Experience, we were led to our assigned pods.
These pods are set up as pairs.
After sliding into the comfortable seats, we had to put on the virtual reality headsets. These are the type that can be worn over glasses and fitted rather nicely.
The VR Experience currently offers four different types of short shows. These are currently:
- Swimming With Humpback
- The Great Migration
- Shark Dive
- Dinosaur Evolution
Each show lasts between 5 to 7 minutes.
The shows are rotated every hour. So what session is showing will depend on what time you arrive. For example, when we were there, the VR Experience Session Timing was:
- 10 am to 11 am – Swimming with Humpback
- 11 am to 12 pm – The Great Migration
- 12 pm to 1 pm – Shark Dive
- 1 pm to 2 pm – Dinosaur Evolution
- 2 pm to 3 pm – The Great Migration
- 3 pm to 4 pm – Dinosaur Evolution
- 4 pm to 5 pm – Swimming with Humpback
After we had put on the VR headset and settled into the pods, the show started.
The VR headset allowed us to look all around 360 degrees. Speakers built into the pods placed us into the ocean world of the humpback whales, with the enchanting whale song reverberating around us.
The pods moved in tandem with the visuals, providing a more immersive experience as we followed the film crew chasing down the majestic humpback whales through the rich blue waters off South America.
Overall, it was an engaging experience. After watching the show, the nine-year-old was hooked and wanted to watch another show – but we had birds to see around the rest of Bird Paradise!
Take note that kids need to be at least 0.9 metres tall to ride on the Wild Explorer VR Adventure.
How Much is the Wild Explorer VR Adventure at Bird Paradise?
The Wild Explorer VR Experience is priced at $8 per session. However, there is a promotion where you can enjoy the experience for $6 from now till 30 September 2025.
Find the Wild Explorer VR Adventure on the third floor of Ocean Network Express Penguin Cove inside Bird Paradise. It is on the same floor where you can exit to the Australian Outback and to the outdoor mini penguin slide.
