Put on your best Robin Hood impression and get ready to shoot some arrows at Stars Archery, the indoor archery range in Malaysia.
We recently paid a visit to Paradigm Mall in Johor Bahru and came across an interesting looking shop in a corner of the mall. Stars Archery is an indoor range where people can just walk in and get a taste of archery in air conditioned comfort.
Always willing to try something new, we decided to give the archery range in the mall a go.

There are several game packages available and no experience is required to give it a go.
The most popular package for first timers is 20 arrows for RM18. We decided to go with this package to get a taster.
Suiting Up to Shoot the Bow and Arrows
After making payment, we had to gear up. The gear consists of a forearm guard that goes on the non-master hand that holds the bow.
On the master hand, or the hand that will be drawing the bow, the fingers are protected with some leather semi-gloves.
All we needed now was the Robin Hood hat. Unfortunately, that does not count as protective gear so we did not get it.
At the Star Archery Indoor Range
Once suited up, we made our way to the range which was just beside the welcome area.
At the range, a staff came by to explain how to hold the bow and how to fit the arrow nock (the slit at the back of the arrow) into the bow string. After some additional simple instructions, it was time to take aim and try to shoot the target.
For adults, there are four roundel targets and these are set around 10 metres away. It looks easier to hit the target than it actually is. You need to aim down the arrow, keep the bow steady and pull back with enough force.
It took a couple of arrows to zero in on the target and a lot more strength than expected (the bow string is heavy). You can also refer to the monitor at the shooting position that provides a close-up image of the target.
However, once we started to find the target, it was quite fun and addictive.
In fact, we had so much fun that after we had completed the first 20 arrows, we decided to get the 52 arrow package (RM48). This comes with eight additional free arrows so we had a total of 60 arrows to shoot.
Archery for Kids
For those who are wondering if kids can try out archery at Star Archery, the minimum age is 8 years old.
The target for kids is also a larger single roundel and it is also placed closer to the shooting position so that kids do not need to use as much strength to hit the target.
Star Archery in Malaysia
If you are looking for something slightly different to do, and something that you can enjoy in air conditioned comfort too, Star Archery is a fun option. It is a chance to challenge yourself to see if you have the skills to wield a bow and arrow, for a little while at least.
