Trulli: Limestone Huts of Alboerobello in Puglia, Italy
Inside the Flower Dome, one of the displays at Rose Romance 2023 highlights a distinct feature of the town of Alboerobello in central Puglia – the trulli.
Trulli are distinctively-shaped limestone huts with conical roofs. At the top of each roof is a sandstone symbol of the stonemason responsible for building the trullo.
White motifs are also painted on the trulli to provide good luck to those living within.
The trulli of Alboerobello are a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Another decorative item that can be seen at Rose Romance 2023 at Gardens by the Bay is the pumo.
This is created in the shape of a rose bud that is about to bloom. and is a symbol of spring, new life and fertility.
Found around the Puglia are ancient estates and farmhouses known as masseria.
These are nowadays often used as locations for weddings. In fact, Puglia is a trending wedding destination internationally.
Collaboration with Registry of Marriages
For Rose Romance 2023, Gardens by the Bay has collaborated with the Registry of Marriages (ROM) to transform one of the gardens at the Flower Dome into a rose-filled Puglian summer wedding setting.
This special garden will be open at selected timings for couples who have registered with ROM to solemnise their marriages. This opportunity will extend for the duration of the floral display, for a limited time only.
The first couple to solemnise their marriage at the Rose Romance floral display in Flower Dome were Lucas Tiong and Charlotte Ho, who were congratulated by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office and Second Minister for Finance and National Development Indranee Rajah at the launch of the floral display.
Rose Romance is designed in partnership with the Embassy of Italy in Singapore.
Ambassador of Italy to Singapore and Brunei Darussalam H.E. Mario Andrea Vattani said, “The Puglia event in Rose Romance is dedicated to one of the most beautiful regions of southern Italy, its territories rich with many UNESCO sites such as the famous trulli of Alberobello which will be displayed at Gardens by the Bay, but also other artistic and handcrafted creations, and of course the local food and wine excellences. The region is also famous for being a renowned wedding destination where lovers choose to take their vows against the backdrop of Puglia’s beautiful landscapes, in iconic rural estate buildings called ‘masserie’. We are delighted that Gardens by the Bay is collaborating with the Registry of Marriages to offer solemnisation sessions in Mediterranean Garden for the whole period of the Rose Romance event.”
