Many families are often frustrated with the visual clutter of toys, or struggle with organising eye-pleasing play zones within their homes with the limited amount of space. We love to escape into experiential stores that embrace the zen, and the tactile – like Riri’s Children Playloft, a toy museum inspired by the Japanese philosophy of play at Upper Thomson.
Riri’s Children Playloft exudes an inviting calming vibe where you can feel as if you have retreated into a Japanese-inspired woodland space. It is a place to reimagine what play can be – or what your home can be.
Riri’s Children Playloft: A Calming Japanese-inspired Woodland Playground for all Ages
Inspired by the Japanese woods, Riri’s Children Playloft embraces the idea of “moku-iku”, with natural wood all-surround, natural skylight windows and child-friendly contoured wooden furniture.

SNOW MUCH TO CELEBRATE: Christmas Fun at The Centrepoint
It is a modern, clean and gorgeous open space that calms you down immediately upon entering, with high airy ceilings and soft neutral tones.
There are six main zones on Level 1:
- Giant Rainbow PegBoard
- Toddler Wooden Games & Doodle Area
- Quiet Cave
- Baby Soft-play Mini Playground
- Riri’s Rainbow Giant Steps & Slide, and
- Kids Wooden Games Area”.
There are a further two zones on Level 2 (The Playloft):
- Campfire, and
- Light & Shadow Play.
There are cameras and screens strategically placed for parents to watch their children on either levels.
This is the perfect place for babies to grandparents, or even children with special needs to indulge in a time of play at their own pace. It is best suited for children aged 2 to 10 years old. Little ones are also welcomed with the supervision of a caregiver.
Riri Bear, the mascot of the space, comes from the Japanese forest and can be found at each play space, inviting everyone to join in a time of gentle play to build happy memories together.
Rainbow Play Spaces Inspired by Natural Light
Upon entering, the children were immediately drawn to this larger-than-life giant wooden pegboard, gleaming with rainbow acrylic transparent pegs that looked like cylindrical candy bars under the gentle sunlight streaming in through the blinds.
The little toddlers could crawl up the gentle raised platform and spent a considerable amount of time fitting, pulling out and chasing the acrylic pegs, working their motor skills and “colour coordination theory”.
Little Pea loved climbing up and down Riri’s Rainbow Giant Steps & Slide, that was thoughtfully illuminated with rainbow lights to guide each step up.
Next to Riri’s Slide was a gorgeous wooden kitchen set by the full length window that invited the kids to be inspiring chefs together. Mini Pea couldn’t get her hands off the mini wooden sushi set, that was so artistically crafted.
Tactile Sensory Wood-play Wonderland
As the older kids ran through the rainbow led tunnel, they entered into a free play area curated with a rich variety of wooden block sets, toys, manipulative, puzzles, traditional Japanese games such as Kendama, Gem placement game, and even wooden build sets like the Colosseum.
Little Pea dove straight into creating her woodland wonderland, complete with roads, bridges.
For the younger toddlers, thoughtfully curated (and labelled) sensory wooden toys such as sensory lava lamps, ball drop spiral ramps and balancing stacking toys kept their little hands busy.
Little Pea enjoyed working her fine motor and coordination skills with cute games like “catch the worms”. We were delighted to find traditional Japanese toys like “Donguri-Kinoko” that taught the kids cause-and-effect with super cute wobbly wooden mushrooms that gently tumbled down a slope, each uniquely.
Kids that love colouring can indulge in colouring a huge world placemat or bring home an “eat sleep doodle” placement with different themes to doodle on the go!
Imaginative Play Areas for Independent or Collaborative Play
Trodding up the soft carpet stairs to Level 2, Little Pea and Mini Pea were captivated by the mesmerising Campfire Zone under the starry starry “black sky”.
It was fascinating for them to build their own “campfire” and barbecue, true “Aussie” style, “outdoors”.
Little Pea almost ate off her roasting stick as she was so immersed in pretend play. We heard some parents dozed off here under the gentle “moonlight” while their kids indulged in play.
Just next door at Light & Shadow Play, the kids were captivated by the skeletal x-rays of different animals displayed on the projectors. It was interesting to form shadows with the acrylic letters and see their own tri-tone shadows on the soft bean bags.
Toddler Friendly Zones for Soft & Hard Play
For the starting out crawlers, there is an accessible soft play fully padded mini playground at Riri’s Children Playloft.
It was a full workout for Mini Pea. Though it looked unassuming – Mini Pea spent a considerable amount trying to conquer each mini slope terrain to get to the slide.
Kids can also retreat into Quiet Cave for their own time-out of pretend play with fun headgears, wooden animal toys or simply just to have a time of quiet play with stacking toys. Parents can also find books on Japanese culture and enjoy bonding with their kids over a good read.
We spent about an hour and a half in this lovely space, where time just slowed down and the kids could occupy themselves rather independently.
It was good rest and respite for the parents, and the kids could not “bear” to leave this magical woodland sanctuary.
Amenities at Riri’s Children Playloft
Diaper changing and toilets are within the compound.
Bags can be placed at lockers at the entrance. Shoes to be left outside, honouring the Japanese tradition.
