My sons have tried three generations of MyFirstFone – MyFirstFone R1, R2 and now the S4. I was excited to see how the smartwatch has developed and hoped to see improvements especially in location tracking.

MyFirstFone S4 Review

With new features such as gamified features to build habits, typing function for messages, “magiCode” vibration messaging, upgraded camera functions, MyFirstFone S4 looked promising as a device ideal for primary-schoolers.

As a parent, I preferred a device that wasn’t as smart as a smartphone yet able to meet the functions of tracking, messaging and keeping in touch. We all know fully well the combination of children and unmonitored device usage. MyFirstFone S4 would be a preferred alternative to giving the child a smartphone in my opinion and delay any reliance on Youtube or Tiktok scrolling.

Functions wise, MyFirstFone has the usual messaging tab which requires parents or caregivers to download the MyFirstFone app to communicate with the user. MyFirstFone S4 also has a 1.54” AMOLED screen, 5MP front camera, waterproof exterior, Dual-band GPS positioning.

First up, the GPS smartwatch has precise GPS tracking delivering accurate location tracking within two metres. More on that later as we trialled the device for a month! There is an always-on function of checking the time without needing to press any buttons for the screen to light up.

Group video calls are possible, with multiple family members or friends chatting. In addition, there is a “magiCode” that allows the creation of secret codes enabling unique communication.

To ensure a more comprehensive review, we tested MyFirstFone S4 for a few weeks especially on connectivity and its messaging function since those were critical issues for us. Especially for children taking public transport, safety and timely location updates are important.

I got my tween’s feedback on his verdict. He commented that he can now type messages instead of leaving voice notes! In the earlier model R2, there was only the possibility of leaving pre-set text messages, emojis or record voice notes. That was not too ideal for me especially when driving to pick him up as I had to play the voice note, decipher what he was saying in a noisy environment during school runs.

Users can now type their own messages. This makes communication so much clearer. I would say this is the most improved and needful function of all.

In addition, I can now see the time my child sent his message by tapping on it then the timestamp would appear. This was not possible for the R2. Knowing the time of the message sent gives me better visibility on the time to arrange pick-ups or meetups.

User Interface is also a lot more sleek, and perhaps less “kiddy”

The User Interface is also a lot more sleek, and perhaps less “kiddy” compared to R2. Of course this would appeal to the tweens more.

My son also appreciated the enhanced camera function which now comes with filters!

MyFirstFone S4 can also be used in countries you travel to – including Malaysia, Australia, China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Taiwan, Vietnam and other Asia Pacific countries. Even when you are on your family holiday, MyFirstFone S4 assures you of your child’s location especially when they wander off.

What i appreciated was also the highly responsive customer service agents! Whenever i had an issue (with the previous model R2), the response was always prompt and polite. This makes the post-sales experience pleasant!

Not-so Loved Features of S4

As mentioned earlier, the main purpose of getting a GPS smartwatch is to track the child especially when he travelled via public transport, or getting to unfamiliar places. Similar to the R2, I can only see the last seen location when my son was underground when taking the MRT.

improvement in precision of GPS tracking

Perhaps this was a issue tough to overcome since the location is largely dependent on GPS. That said, there was an improvement in precision of GPS tracking as compared to the R2.

One of the selling points of the S4 is the magiCode vibrations. It might sound like fun in theory with secret languages between friends and family. In reality, it was hard to create a unique code and replicate. In short, it’s a redundant function and far easier to just type a text message or send emojis.

This was fun earning rewards from completing tasks like homework or just walking to achieve step goals. However, it seemed tough to advance to the next level. It’s definitely a welcome addition to MyFirstFone.

Parent’s MyFirstFone App

The same app is used for R2 hence there was no difficulty in using the interface. I can see anyone who connects with my child and that gives me peace of mind. I can also choose controls such as class mode to prevent usage in classes (school/tuition/CCA), limit safe zone and more.

Apart from a slight delay when syncing the latest messages, I have used the app for several years and gotten quite used to the interface. It helps me track my child, send messages and also see who my child interacts with.

MyFirstFone S4 – Final Thoughts

Priced at $299, MyFirstFone S3 relies on a esim with a subscription rate of $9.90 per month or $91.43 a year. Compared to competing brands such as Xiaomi or even Garmin, MyFirstFone S3 costs more with more functions that you may not need. However, it gives you peace of mind and keeps you in touch with your child without the possible dangers of owning a smartphone.
