Music is a language that can be understood by people of all different walks of life. This Mother’s Day, newly minted singer-songwriter Priscilla Tan has just released her original song “Love Like Mine” which comes with an empowering encouragement to fellow Mothers to chase their dreams.
Priscilla is a 33-year-old mum of a five-year-old son and has been singing professionally for about six years before taking a leap of faith to produce her original songs. The debut song “Love Like Mine” is a song that she wrote after an encounter that made her realise what a mother’s unconditional love means.
The Story Behind “Love Like Mine”
Priscilla shares that this incident happened on a night that she was having a music performance, and it was the first time she didn’t bring her phone along with her.
“I came home to broken pieces of glass, a floor full of bloodstains and a slew of missed calls on my phone. Turns out, the glass door had shattered on my son and he was in the hospital getting 6 stitches. In this moment, my heart broke, full of mum guilt as to why I was not home for my son when this happened when I was out singing, and I would have done anything to take his place and suffer the pain that he was going through.
But when I got to the hospital, my son was blowing kisses and smiling with the doctors and nurses, family members, as if nothing had happened and the bandages on his face were not there!
I realised then, I was absolved of all “mum guilt” for pursuing my dreams and what it means to love unconditionally, and how this boy knew how to love because he was first loved by me, by his father & everyone around him, and how powerful a mother’s love can be.
My aim with this song is to give everyone (with or without a mother) a sense of what a mother’s love feels like – however differently it might feel for each person.”
Priscilla hopes that her song will speak to fellow mums and open up conversations about what being a mother means. From there, she hopes to build a community of mothers to address common fears and worries, spur each other on and inspire each other, especially when they feel alone in their motherhood journey.
