We love LEGO’s Chinese New Year sets which feature intricate details and designs that inspire play. This year, LEGO has released some new sets for the 2026 Year of the Horse and we had the chance to get our hands on one of these sets – the Fortune Firecracker – and give it a build.
LEGO Fortune Firecracker 801118 Review
The Fortune Firecracker is a festive decoration, part of LEGO’s Spring Festival collection. With 1039 pieces, it is suitable for ages 9+ and parents can build it together with their child.
At first glance, the design of theLEGO Fortune Firecracker looks similar to a regular Chinese New Year decoration. However, it has a few surprises up its sleeves.
The body of the decoration, where the firecrackers hang off, is actually a secret box. It has two doors that can be opened to reveal a festive scene with minifigures inside.
What’s more, this scene can be switched out and interchanged – great for customising the decoration to suit whatever you want.
The tassels of the Fortune Firecracker hang down freely, giving the display a bit of a dynamic feel. In addition, when you move the firecrackers, there are little crackling sounds – a cute way to mimic the sound of firecrackers.
Fortune Firecracker Build Experience
With more than 1,000 pieces, including many small ones, the Fortune Firecracker is designed for older kids. The bricks come in nine packs.
There are six mini figures included in the LEGO Chinese New Year 2026 set and that’s where the build process starts. We first assembled the two scenes that would eventually fit within the box of the Fortune Firecracker. One scene features the mini figs with fireworks and firecrackers while the other has a LEGO God of Fortune.
Next, we moved on to building the hexagonal box of the Fortune Firecracker. Fitting it together, we enjoyed watching it take shape.
The assembled box of the Fortune Firecracker is approximately 20 cm by 25 cm.
There was once interesting piece that we came across as we were assembling the box that had not seen before. It was only after completing the Fortune Firecracker that we realised it was a piece that allowed the Fortune Firecracker to be securely wall-mounted. Ingenious!
There was also a piece that was designed to pivot at the bottom of the box. It was only when we completed it that was part of a mechanism to open up the box.
There are no stickers that need to be pasted on any pieces of this set. This was a bit of a relief to us as we usually get a bit stressed about sticking it on perfectly! Instead, there are pieces that already come with decorations printed on them.
The set comes with eight firecrackers. In each of the hollow firecrackers, we placed a couple of small LEGO pieces. These gave the firecrackers a “crackle” when moved! Fun!
The completed LEGO Fortune Firecracker measures 47 cm in height and 27 cm in width. It is 7 cm deep.
