Did you know that you can wakesurf at Bedok Reservoir? I have a tween who’s eager to try new experiences this season, so we decided to dive into something exciting — wakesurfing at Bedok Reservoir!

Lately, I’ve been wanting to carve out more quality one-on-one time with my daughter in Primary 4. I’ve come to realize just how important these solo outings are in strengthening our parent-child bond.

When it’s just the two of us, without siblings competing for attention, it creates space for deeper connection and more open conversations about things like friendships, interests, and growing up.

This outing was the perfect chance to not only try something new together but also have those meaningful heart-to-heart chats during the journey there and back.

Wakesurfing is a water sport where you ride the wave( or “wake”) created by a boat, without being towed by a rope.

There’s no minimum age for wakesurfing, but it’s best suited for those who are confident and comfortable in the water, even if they haven’t learnt to swim yet.

We booked our session online under the “Group Class” category, registering ourselves as beginners. It was the most pocket-friendly option compared to a private charter.

The group class costs $99 per person, with a maximum of 4 participants. Each booking form includes an indemnity agreement for one person, so we submitted two. Since we only filled two slots, I was prepared to make new friends with fellow beginners; also a great chance to model social skills for my tween.

Each person gets two 15-minute rides. Don’t underestimate those 30 minutes,  it is enough to send your body into muscle aches for the next few days!

For those curious, a private charter goes for $280 per hour, accommodating up to 8 people.

Packing List for Wakesurfers

Life vests are provided for all participants. However, if your child has a smaller build, you might want to bring their own personal flotation device to ensure a snug and secure fit, just in case the provided ones don’t suit them perfectly.

Don’t forget to pack a change of clothes, toiletries if you plan to shower, a towel, water and some sunblock. Footwear will be left on the floating dock before you board the boat, so it’s best to wear something easy to slip off.

Wakesurf Coaching by Wakemusters

The coach will choose a suitable wakesurf board based on whether it’s for an adult or a child. You’ll first receive a  briefing on how to get onto the board, followed by hands-on practice in the water while the boat remains stationary.

Once the coach feels you’re ready, it’s time to give the real thing a go. You’ll start by holding onto a rope to help you get up on the board. Once you’re balanced and stable, the goal is to let go and ride the wake on your own, though that might take more than one lesson.

Falling into the water is all part of the learning curve, so be prepared to take a few splashes. The company proudly claims that everyone gets up on the board in their first session, and in our case, that was true for my child!

In her first lesson, she managed to stand and ride just outside the wake for a short stretch, which was a great start! She hasn’t quite found her balance to glide confidently yet, so she’s still holding on to the rope for now. Even before we left Bedok Reservoir Park, my girl was already asking me to book her next session so she can keep improving her skills.

We returned for our wakesurfing lesson the following week, this time joined by our family friends, both the parents and kids were eager to learn the sport together.

Sensing that one child needed an extra boost of confidence, Coach Merelda did something none of us expected: she jumped into the water to coach the child up close. And just when we thought that was the highlight, she invited the child to surf with her, giving a firsthand feel of what it’s like to ride the waves. The cheers from all the adults and kids behind the camera said it all, it was such a memorable moment!

(Disclaimer: I’m not sure if every child will get this same experience; it likely depends on Coach Merelda’s discretion. My child didn’t have this, but it was incredible to witness.)

From our chats, it’s clear Coach Merelda pours her heart into wakesurfing. Her passion for the sport and her drive to inspire young learners truly shine through.

That said, she’s also firm. She’ll tell you what you need to fix without sugarcoating it (but don’t worry, she’s not scary!). In this second lesson, my girl listened closely, stayed focused, and even managed to surf without the rope for a short stretch!

As I watched my child as a beginner go from zero to riding waves in two sessions,  I was deeply impressed by Coach Merelda’s coaching.

Life Lessons for Tweens (and maybe us adults)

During our heart-to-heart chatas we reflected on our first sport learned together, I shared a valuable reminder: the path from ground zero to success is rarely a straight line. While we often imagine progress as a smooth upward climb, the reality is filled with dips, curves, and unexpected turns.

We managed to stand up on the board, only to fall the next moment; we caught a wave, then toppled again when we let go of the rope. These ups and downs, as uncomfortable and unpredictable as they are, are actually signs that we’re truly learning.

It’s easy to feel stuck or frustrated in the middle of the process. But instead of giving in, we can learn to tolerate that frustration with small, self-motivating pep talks like: “Next round, I’m pushing my heel harder to get myself up,” or “Stay balanced for five more seconds and I’m closer to surfing the wake.”

Even if my child eventually decides to stop wakesurfing, the lesson stays with us, and can be applied to any new challenge, whether it’s academics, life skills, or a brand-new hobby. But for now, we’re ready for our next wakesurfing lesson, one step closer to mastery!
