Explore 22 Zones at the New Singapore Oceanarium

Oceanarium 01

Embark on a cohesive journey through 22 zones that tell an enthralling tale of life under the sea, woven together with a clear message of the importance of marine conservation. Look out for the digital screens marking the start of each zone, containing brief information on each zone and seamlessly guiding you on your journey through the Singapore Oceanarium.

The different zones at the Singapore Oceanarium broadly follows a downward trajectory, starting from the surface and prehistory before plunging to the depths of the oceans and eventually the ocean floor.

-- Story continues below --

Here is a look at what you can expect at the different zones as you journey through the Singapore Oceanarium.

Drop of Water

Oceanarium 02

Your journey through the Singapore Oceanarium begins here, exploring the life of plankton, the fundamental building block of entire marine ecosystems. Gaze up at the awe-inspiring domed ceiling, where a mesmerising projection magnifies the microscopic plankton to become visible to the naked eye.

Ocean Wonders

Oceanarium 03

Sea jellies take centrestage at Ocean Wonders –  and they are truly a wonder to behold. These fascinating creatures are meticulously bred and nurtured in-house, ensuring their health and well-being.

Oceanarium 21

At the heart of this zone lies one of the world’s largest Kreisel tanks, home to thousands of Moon Jellies.

Watching the sea jellies pulse and free-float was a truly mesmerising experience, made all the more captivating by immersive lighting and ethereal soundscapes, and I felt like I could literally spend hours watching them – but don’t, for there is still much ahead to explore!

Beyond this, cylindrical habitats offer a 360-degree view of other species, including Atlantic Sea Nettles, Fried Egg Sea Jellies and more.

Ancient Waters

Oceanarium 04

Dinosaur lovers will be thrilled with this zone, where life-sized animatronics and towering replicas bring long-extinct giants such as Dunkleosteus and Xiphactinus back to life, immersing visitors in a pre-historic marine world.

Come up close to fossil displays, interactive discovery points and digital experiences revealing the intricate details of ancient marine organisms. Live habitats house the modern-day remnants of this prehistoric world such as the Australian Lungfish, Arapaima, Horseshoe Crab and Epaulette Shark.

Conquering Land

Oceanarium 05

Sea meets land in this zone where amphibians and reptiles are on display. Live habitats showcase the adorable Axolotols (one for the Minecraft fans!), Japanese Giant Salamanders and Poison Dart Frogs, while extinct species such as the Eryops and Diplocaulus reappear through digital representations above the tanks using the Pepper’s Ghost effect.

Spirit of Exploration

Spirit of Exploration

At the heart of the Spirit of Exploration zone lies the Jewel of Muscat, a remarkable reconstruction of a 9th-century Omani dhow, a vessel that once navigated the vast Indian Ocean.

Want to get up close to this magnificent vessel?

Be sure to check out Pier Adventure, a suspended web that allows visitors a daring new perspective beyond solid ground.

Balance and bounce your way across the web the runs alongside the ship. Note that participants must be at least 4 years old and 110 cm tall, and those under 7 years old must be accompanied by an adult.

Pier Adventure is open from 11 am to 6.30 pm and has a minimum height requirement of 110 cm and a minimum age of 4 years old. It is priced at $10 for adults (13 to 59 years old) and $8 for a child (4 to 12 years old).

However, as part of Singapore Oceanarium’s opening promotions, you can enjoy complimentary entry by downloading the Singapore Oceanarium app.

Just beside the Pier Adventure entry point is Explorer’s Nook, the cafeteria at Singapore Oceanarium. It serves food such as sandwiches and other light bites and pastries with an ocean-inspired theme. There is a decently sized seating area here too.

Encounter local species like the Archerfish and Barred Mudskipper in live habitats, and watch other coastal animals come to life through projection mapping, scuttling across rockwork in a mesmerising display of movement and light. It definitely looks so lifelike that my toddler got scared by the “crabs”!

The highlight of this area is the touch pools where you can have a high-touch experience with marine animals.

Oceanarium 08

Get up close and personal with Singapore’s biodiversity, where you’ll be able to experience for yourself how a Knobbly Sea Star or a Spotted Seahorse feels like. Fancy a shrimp spa?

For those seeking a fun hands-on challenge, an interactive screen invites visitors to test their knowledge by identifying species based on their unique traits.

oceanarium 11

Within this zone, you’ll also find the Aquarist Lab – a working lab where hatchlings like sea jellies from in-house breeding programs are nurtured, and plankton is cultured to support reef life. Visitors can glimpse the lab’s fascinating operations through large viewing windows.

Open Ocean

oceanarium 12

The ocean’s endless wonder unfolds in Open Ocean, where you will find the Oceanarium’s most expansive habitat and viewing panel – an immense 36 metre-wide window into the deep that stretches across the space.

The Sargassum habitat showcases a drifting ecosystem rich with life, home to species like the Sargassum fish, Mysid shrimp, and Japanese Big Eye, each uniquely adapted to life on the move.

Vertical Migrators and Horizontal Migrators

The Vertical Migrators zone reveals species that move with the changing light, descending to the ocean’s depths in the day and rising to shallow water at night. Learn more about the Japanese Pineapplefish whose bioluminescent glow likely helps it communicate with others of its kind or camouflage.

Alongside them, the Horizontal Migrators habitat highlights ocean wanderers like the Indo-Pacific Bottlenose Dolphins which navigate vast distances with precision honed by generations, as well as the Hawksbill Sea Turtles which travel thousands of kilometres across the ocean in search of breeding grounds.

This is where you will be able to pick up some souvenirs from a small gift shop Tidal Trove or a bite from a food counter.

Voila! Your unique creation is now swimming happily across a projected display on the wall. You can even receive a digital copy of your fish card, simply by entering your email address.

Artificial Habitats

Oceanarium 01

Make your way down a walkthrough tunnel and a viewing panel where Zebra Sharks and Blotched Fantail Rays glide through the remnants of a sunken vessel at a tank that was previously known as the Shipwreck Gallery. This is an example of an artificial reef that provides a second chance for marine life to flourish.

Then explore replicas of artificial habitats developed with insights from researchers and conservationists, demonstrating how science and innovation come together to create sustainable ecosystems that support marine biodiversity.
