If you are a dog lover or if you have one in the family, a visit to the Shiba Cafe in the Mount Austin area of Johor Bahru will be a treat. It is an opportunity to spend some time with a pack of friendly dogs, not just shiba inus but other breeds as well.
Shiba Cafe, Johor Bahru: Meet the Adorable Dogs
Before making your way to the Shiba Cafe, you will need to make a booking online first as reservations are required. This is easy enough to do by simply heading over to the Shiba Cafe’s website and selecting a time slot for your visit.
Shiba Cafe opens at 11.15 am and the sessions last for about an hour each. We made our booking on the day of our visit and had no issues getting a timeslot even though it was a public holiday.

The Shiba Cafe is located within a shophouse in the Mount Austin area of Johor Bahru.
We had to make our way up a flight of stairs to the Shiba Cafe, taking off our shoes and leaving them along the stairs before entering into the premises.
Inside, we checked in at the counter and were informed that we could also purchase some treats to feed the dogs for RM5.
We picked up a small container of treats.
The dog interaction area at Shiba Cafe is just beside the entry area.
Before we could enter in, we had to put on blue plastic foot covers that were provided by the staff. Once we were ready, we were let in to the interaction area where we could stow away our bags at the cubby hole there.
The interaction area is open and there are benches along the side of the wall where we could take a seat.
Interacting with the Dogs at Shiba Cafe, Johor Bahru
Even though it is branded as a Shiba cafe, you meet other breeds of dogs there too! There were beautiful Siberian Huskies and Samoyeds too. There were 10 dogs in the interaction area when we were there.
The dogs at the Shiba Cafe looked happy and healthy. They would come up to us (thanks to the treats) and seems to be well adjusted and not stressed. There were around two to three staff in the interaction area at any time. Occasionally, when dogs started to fight, the staff would step in to discipline them.
We enjoyed the chance to simply sit around, pet the dogs and feed them the treats. The dogs have different personalities and it was also fun to get to know them better.
The staff were also very friendly and came up to us to share about the dogs.
Midway through our session, the staff took out a laminated sheet with pictures of the dogs on them. It was a quiz and our challenge was to identify the dogs. It was helpful that there was a chart on the wall showing the dogs with their names on the wall. Through this, we got to know the dogs better – for example, we learnt that Charlie was the CEO of the pack!
After completing the quiz, we were rewarded with extra special treats in a golden mini pan. These are especially coveted by the dogs and we were told that we should get the dogs to sit before giving it to them. We duly followed the instructions and were delighted when the dogs obediently sat down – they were so well trained!
As the session neared its end, the staff gathered up the dogs for a group photo. Customers could form a line to take a group photos with the new furry friends. It was a great memento of our visit to the Shiba Cafe.
The Shiba Cafe admission also comes with an ice cream and a drink!
The experience at Shiba Cafe was lovely and we left satisfied after having met with the pack of delightful dogs! It is an experience that dog lovers will appreciate.
